Crawford v. Pods

Postby JRM4833 » Fri Mar 26, 2004 4:57 pm

Just wondering why everyone seems to be very high on Crawford this year and staying away from Podsednik? Personally I like Crawford better, but I think Pods is a much cheaper alternative and may have a very good year. Both in the same situation except Crawford played about 60 games in 2002. But Pods beat out Crawford last year in runs, 2B, HR, RBI, BB, BA, OBP, SLG and OPS. Pods had less Ks and even hits. I know the loss of Sexson will likely decrease his runs, but in comparison to Craw, its not like the Rays have a bunch of RBI guys either. Any thoughts?

I had a chance to watch Podsednik play a few times in Tacoma back in the day, and I thought he was decent at best. Of course, a lot can change in a few years, but just based off of that, I was really surprised with his production last season - I envisioned him as a role player at best. Anyway, he looked great last season whenever I watched the Brewers play (very seldom).

...Didn't pay much attention to the Devil Rays, aside from when they were playing the Mariners. I've read a lot of good things about Crawford...

Sorry about this post not really answering your question... :-/

Just wanted to get some other opinions. I didnt expect anything out of Pods last year either and didnt have him. But I think that even if he can put up similar numbers as last year he will be a steal at 40-50 picks at least after Crawford in most leagues. I just cant say Ive seen him play all that much being in an AL city. I did see Crawford alot last year and was impressed at times and not so impressed at others. Both are still progressing obviously.

Anybody know exactly what Pods career minor league BA was? I think it was something like .260 right? That's a huge part of the reason I'm not high on him. When someone increases their BA by 54 points their rookie season look for them to drop way back down to normal in the sophomore campaign. Still get you 40+ steals probably but I think of him as more of a Sanchez than a Crawford kind of player.

Inkubus, did you even read the thread?

I didnt know he only batted 260 in the minors. Like I said before, I think he might be a great cheap alternative to Crawford if you can get him around the 8th to 10th round, way ahead of where Crawford is going. Do you know his stats in the minors?

Canacuna very cool thanks. So he had a .265 career minor league average but hit .314 in his rookie season. Who knows maybe he hits .350 but I'd put my money on .280 at best. As before a nice amount of steals but I would never take him in the 8th-10th rounds I'd wait for the 15th or lower since he should only contribute in one category this year ala Sanchez and Roberts.

I think Pods will be fine, Hes gonna steal all the time. He will get on base, Brewer lineup sucks but He will get you 40 bags, Is he a top of the line player no, but hes much better than A Sanzhez
