The Red Sox have become who they despise the most. It will be even sweeter when the Yanks kick their @ss
Well put. ESPN said it best:
A team that has often complained about the spending habits of the New York Yankees, who two years ago swooped in and outbid Boston for Mark Teixeira, has abandoned fiscal restraint by making Crawford the first player in Red Sox history with a contract with an average annual value in excess of $20 million.
I NEVER want to hear Sox fans complaining about the Yankees spending money again, what a joke. With that said, how I feel now is likely how Red Sox fans felt when we got Tex, Sabathia and Burnett in one year. The one good thing about this is that Yanks are a lock to get Lee at this point.
We sign one major deal and that makes us like the Yanks huh? We traded for Gonzalez. We traded for Beckett. Lester, Buchholz, Pedrioa, Ellsbury, and Youk are all homegrown. We have never gone out and spent millions upon millions every offseason. Sure, we can spend money too, but we CAN'T and we DON'T spend it like you YANKS. The fact is... we had to spend this much to keep him off the Yankees, and right now Yankee fan can't fathom that scenario.
Seriously? Do you not realize that the only reason you're team is able to trade for talent like Gonzalez or Beckett (at the time) is because they came from small-market teams who weren't going to be able to re-sign them? And just because Gonzalez hasn't inked and extension doesn't mean it's not right on the horizon, and it's going to be a monster deal I'm sure. Have the Sox developed some good homegrown talent? Absolutely. But I guess Cano, Hughes, Gardner, etc. are nothing to the Yanks? Not to mention they developed Jeter, Rivera, Posada and Pettitte...it's not as if they stole those players from another franchise.
It really is funny that Boston fans refuse to admit what they are. I'm not in denial about what the Yankees are and how they run their team. I'm fully aware that they spend more money than everyone else and they rely heavily on free agent talent in building their roster. What kills me is that Boston does the same exact thing but are usually more stingy about it (A-Rod in '04, Teixeira in '08, etc.)...yet Sox fans are always the first to complain about the Yankees. Crazy.

I haven't looked at the numbers in depth, but from what I've gathered through various sources, the red sox really haven't increased their payroll from last year. If we factor in the AGon extension, next year does not look like it will be significantly higher either. They have a few players coming off their books this year (Lugo, Lowell for example). Also, doesn't look like next year's free agent class is nearly as strong, so I'd be surprised if they compete at all with this year's signings. Of course all this could change if they go after Martin like they are said to be and nab a few high-end middle relievers. I know they are inching up on the Yanks, but they still have a long way to go.

I think most Red Sox fans would agree they are a big market team. Nevertheless, no one can compete with the Yankees resources, who are the only team that consistently exceeds the luxury tax. And it is not like the Red Sox (or anyone else ever approaches the Yankees either). In 2010 the difference in payrolls between the two teams was over $45 million. That is approximately the same difference as the Mets and the Twins. I have no issue with the Yankees spending their resources, but don't prentend that the spending of Red Sox approaches the level of the Yankees.

Just wanted to fix a few things...some of us do realize and appreciate the financial position this team is in. I will never pretend that we don't buy players from franchises who can't afford them because the roster since the signing of Manny has had its share of them. I will say that the team does this to stay competitive with the Yankees, but never will I blame them for it. They want to put the best team out there they can and they, the Yankees that is, want to go after a championship every year. What's not to like about that? I'm glad the Sox are making these moves and I won't apologize for it either.
with jacoby and crawford able to cover so much ground, do they really need a 3rd OF? too bad crawford's speed in the OF will be nullified thanks to the green monster.

I'm not sure what kind of arm he has, but is moving to RF completely out of the question??
