Buck and Marlins in agreement on 3 yrs, $18M. Pending physical.
Nice contract for Buck. I'm sure Cito will be getting his cut. Jays get a supplemental round draft pick.
This is the biggest signing out of FA by the Marlins since they signed Delgado in 2005, and just after they traded Uggla. Are they trying to get the MLB Front Office off their backs by spending some money?
I thought Buck would wait for V-Mart to sign before making a decision, but this certainly is a nice contract. Buck was one of the guys the Red Sox were interested in, so it will be interesting to see who they pursue now.
They had him valued at $12M/year long-term (and he apparently is worth more to other teams), and they had him short-term for whatever arbitration would award him (almost guaranteed to be significantly lower than that). So right there, they lost value. They also lose two first round picks in 2012. And then they give John Buck, who is a coin-flip away from having a sub-300 OBA, $18M over 3 years. They lost a lot more talent than they gained, and they don't even save money. It just doesn't make sense. It especially won't make sense in 2013 when they could have Cameron Maybin, 2 first round picks a year into their development, and more financial freedom without 33 year old John Buck taking up 15% of their payroll.
