That's definitely sad for the family and unfortunate that a dog that wasn't supposed to be put down was euthanized, but the owners have to assume at least as much responsibility as the shelter. I know I'm the resident animal hater, so I'm sure whatever I say on this will be taken with a grain of salt, but if you have your dog somewhere unsecure that it can escape from and you don't have it tagged, that's on you.
Also, can we stop anthropomorphizing dogs? This dog wasn't acting "heroically" by alerting when a stranger came onto the base, it was acting like a dog.

Agreed.
While dogs can be useful, the average dog is pretty useless. Yes, they're good for companionship but people can't project human feelings onto dogs or any other animal for that matter. As if a dog taking a whizz on my shoes is a sign that it likes me.
