Padres Trade for Maybin

Postby wrveres » Sat Nov 13, 2010 6:48 pm

The Padres have reached agreement on a trade with the Marlins for Cameron Maybin, according to Tom Krasovic of Fanhouse (via Twitter). The Marlins will receive relievers Ryan Webb and Edward Mujica in exchange for the center fielder, Krasovic tweets.

The deal will provide Maybin with a much needed change of scenery, Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports writes (via Twitter). The 23-year-old has yet to realize his potential after coming over to the Marlins in the 2007 Miguel Cabrera-Dontrelle Willis trade. Maybin's performance at the plate was particularly disappointing this season as he hit .234/.302/.361 with eight homers in 322 plate appearances.

The 6'6" Webb appears to be the key to the trade, Krasovic tweets. The right-hander could be a set-up man for the Fish and is not yet arbitration-eligible. Heading into the 2010 season, Baseball America rated Webb as the 24th best prospect in San Diego's system. The 24-year-old has a 94-96 mph fastball with a strong mid-80s curveball, according to the publication.
awesome ... see ya later Mr Gwynn.

Dumb. Webb and Mujica were fantastic in the pen in 2010, and Gwynn was the best defensive CF in the league by a wide margin (2nd best defender overall on a per-150 basis).

I'd be excited if I were a Pads fan. Maybin needed to get out of Florida.

So Miguel Cabrera turned into a few RPs. At least they did get rid of Dontrelle. !+)

bullpen arms are a dime a dozen in SD, and they have more in waiting. Maybin is still very young, and is cost controlled for a number of years. Im done with Gwynn. He was AAAA at best when Towers traded for him and he is AAA at best now.

Well, people said the same thing about Phil Nevin and he managed to hammer out a pretty good, all-star in fact, career in SD. Trevor Hoffman was another late bloomer for the Padres as was Scott Hairston and current closer Heath Bell. Not saying the same is going to happen with Maybin but there is a precedent in SD.

so trading our 5th and 7th best bullpen guys for a guy who is still only 23, is solid on D, and potential thru the roof is a bad idea?

sorry TGjr was so bad offensively he wasnt even our CF the final 2 months of the year

Gwynn's WAR was 1.7. Maybin's was 0.4 in just 17 fewer PA. An extra .072 in OPS is not worth the defensive downgrade, especially when you're giving up an extra 0.8 in RP (which should be higher because Mujica got unlucky with a 17.7% HR/FB despite his 9.3/0.8 K/BB rate). Geez, why are the Padres so obsessed with offense? :-?

Im not a big fan of WAR, it said Chase Headley was good and thats all I need to know.

Gwynn was far above his career defensively, and was completely useless at the plate. Like I said though he wasnt even the CF the final 2 months of the year, and he wasnt gonna be the CF to start the year. If they didnt acquire one with a little more upside Venable would have been in CF with Denorfia or Cunningham in the OF as well.

Maybin is 23
Gwynn is 29

Interesting trade. At this stage it's pretty even, although SD could end up running away with it.

Webb is a rare reliever who gets mega-GBs (62% in 2010). If he can lift his K/9 rate from 6.7 into the 8 region he will be teh sex for Florida for a long time. Florida have an unusual bullpen now, with 3 set-up/closer-y pitchers who generated 50%+ GBs in 2010 (Hensley, Nunez, Webb).

Maybin has really got to bridge the gap between his decent minor league and his atrocious majors BB/K, otherwise he'll be a bust. Luckily he's only 23, so he's got some time.

Minors
2009: 0.66
2010: 0.60

Majors %-6
2009: 0.33
2010: 0.26
