Longshot closers for 2011?

Postby P.S. » Thu Sep 16, 2010 1:15 am

Hey all,

In a keeper league, I'm looking to pick up two pitchers who may be closers next season. They would need to be starting the year as closers, otherwise I would most likely just drop them before the auction. Do you have any thoughts on the guys below?

Here is the list of guys who are available and who I thought had a decent possibility of becoming closers:

Mike Adams
Mike Gonzalez
Ryan Perry
Robinson Tejeda
Brian Fuentes
Jon Rauch
Michael Wuertz
Takashi Saito
Bobby Parnell
Jason Motte

Thanks for the time.

I think somebody signs Fuentes to close. Gonzalez is under contract with BAL next year. I'd put him somewhere between 30-50% chance in regaining his job by Opening Day. Saito could have a chance if Wagner retires and he's not non-tendered. Everybody else on your list seems like a very long shot.

What about Jordan Walden or Jake McGee? I put both more likely than everybody but Fuentes and maybe Gonzalez. Walden seems likely to get a chance to beat out Rodney in the spring (assuming they don't sign somebody). Soriano & Benoit are FA in TB. I could see McGee getting a serious look.

Thanks for the information, mblax10. Didn't know Benoit was a FA, I actually picked him up recently. I'll keep Walden and McGee in mind along with the others. :)

Anyone else have thoughts on the guys in this thread (or other pitchers)?

Mike Gonzalez would be a good choice. Uehara just blew one for me last night in the semifinals. Like another said, Fuentes will likely be signed to be a closer for somebody. I think these 2 have the best probability to close.

not that it's an exciting prospect but IF the Rangers try to pull Feliz out of the 'pen and into the rotation Francisco or even Scheppers may have a shot at the closers job again.

Clay Hensley may have a shot at staying next year's closer for the Marlins. He's looked good in the role and has been a favorite of the organization this year. Of course they could go back to Nunez if he returns to form or they could bring someone else in.

Daniel Bard has a decent shot if the Sox don't re-sign Papelbon
Brandon League
Johnny Venters
Ryan Madson
Luke Gregorson
Scott Downs
Jason Frasor
Joba Chamberlain - Hell might freeze over and the Yankees don't re-sign Mo

Thanks for the help with mine

I would go with Mike Gonzalez 1st, then it's tricky, Perry will be a closer soon but when, Fuentes will be signed as a closer somewher so he is my 2nd choice, but keep a eye on Bard if the Sox don't bring back Papelbon

help with mine?
