UMSL Golf Team Put on Probation for Fantasy Sports Games

While I'm sure the NCAA rules clearly point out that fantasy games are gambling if money's involved, this certainly seems crazy given that even the federal government excludes fantasy sports from gambling oversight.

NCAA violations for Missouri-St. Louis

The NCAA has put the University of Missouri-St. Louis on probation for two years, citing wagering violations within the men's golf program.

The NCAA Division II Committee on Infractions announced the penalty on Friday. The golf coach was not named, but school records indicate that Dustin Ashby was head coach at the time of the infractions, from 2004 to 2008. Phone messages left with Ashby and the university were not returned.

The NCAA says the head golf coach paid an entry fee and played fantasy football and baseball for prizes, violating NCAA rules on sports wagering.

The coach also bought and operated an online fantasy football business and hired the former volunteer coach, who acted as commissioner. The NCAA says the volunteer coach then hired three of the team's golfers.
