Advice on which 5 to keep. WHIR.

Postby tgt2e » Thu Aug 19, 2010 9:14 pm

So I just traded ARod and De La Rosa away for Matt Holliday and Bucholz. Now I'm trying to decide on 5 keepers. All help is appreciated. Leave a link and I'll return the favor. Here's my roster:

C Wieters
1B Cuddyer
2B Utley
3B Stewart
SS Rollins
LF Holliday
CF Victorino
RF Stanton
UTIL Ortiz
UTIL Kubel
BENCH Delmon Young
BENCH Lind
BENCH Alfonso Soriano
DL Youkilis

SP Sabathia
SP Jimenez
SP Bucholz
SP Hamels
SP Jurrjens
SP Vazquez
SP Kuroda
SP Arroyo
SP/RP Chapman
RP Broxton
RP Raf Soriano
RP Capps

5 Keepers. Here's what I'm thinking (with the picks they would replace):
Utley (1st Round)
Holliday (2nd Round)
CC (3rd Round)
Ubaldo (11th Round)
Bucholz (12th Round)

Other possibilities:
Stanton (Last round, as I picked him up as a FA. I feel that I could still get him fairly late in the draft, though).
Youk (4th rounder, 1B is pretty deep but you never know who everyone else is gonna keep)

Again, leave a link and I'll do my best to help.

I wouldnt want to keep 3 pitchers so I would throw in Youk for one of the pitchers you were considering to keep. Pitchers are much more unpredictable and usually easier to find on FA during the season.

Normally I would only recommend keeping 1 sp if you have 5 keepers, but looking at your team I think you need to keep both CC and Ubaldo. There is no way I would keep 3 sp's though.

When it comes to your hitters, Holliday and Utley are no-brainers. I think Utley as a 1st rounder is over-paying a bit, but with position scarcity you got to do it. Then I would keep Youkilis. Sure, 1B is deep....but it is not as deep as you think....and the top guys all go fast. if you miss out on the run you can end up out in the cold. And 4th round is just about the right price for Youk.

I would pass on stanton. For me he is a borderline keeper in my league with 10 keepers. He will probably turn out to be a solid player.....but he doesn't strike me as a guy who will be elite any time soon. You have anough options that can help you win next year that I wouldn't waste a spot on a guy who probably wont pay dividens for a few years (the the price of only a last round pick is a good deal).

So, in short, here are the 5 guys I would keep:

CC
Ubaldo
Holliday
Utley
Youk

Could you post which round each of the players on your roster would cost you in the 2011 draft? You have a lot of solid talent, but it's tough to provide an opinion on how you can maximize value with your 5 keepers without that information.

Off the cuff I would definitely not keep CC Sabathia if it cost me a 3rd round pick. He's been on a steady decline trend since that amazing 2008 season split between AL/NL. I would have a hard time not keeping Matt Wieters, Delmon Young, Jonathan Broxton, Cole Hamels, Mike Stanton, etc. in a keeper league, but it all depends on what they would cost.
We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.

Agree with you on Utley and Holliday, but I wouldn't keep CC for a 2rd rounder. I'd probably replace him with Youk. Like misterf said, if you miss on 1B, you're stuck with garbage. This is coming from someone who has Cuddyer and Howie Kendrick as his 1B and CI. Ugh.

That said, I also LOVE Delmon Young. Definitely someone I'll be keeping.

i would say utley, holliday, youk, ubaldo, buchholz--CC isnt much better than buchholz for anything but Ks, and hes worse in some areas so id much rather have buchholz in the 12th. could also see taking delmon young over youk (since i assume you get him very cheap), or stanton (having a young guy with his potential locked in the last round would be pretty phenomenal down the road).

My big question is Stanton, If you get him as a last round pick for next year and this is a keeper league what happens the following season? id he you last round pick again??? If so then him because this kid is an absolute BEAST but I am foggy on your settings

Alright lots of questions to answer here. I'm not sure how accurate the draft recap is on my league homepage but I'm gonna do my best to give you rounds. I traded for CC and yeah I don't really value him as a 3rd rounder, but I don't know exactly what kind of talent I'll be able to get in the 3rd round. This is the first year of our keeper league so I'm not sure what the other guys will be doing keeper-wise. Here's my team with rounds beside potential keepers:

C Wieters (7th round)
1B Cuddyer
2B Utley (1st round)
3B Stewart
SS Rollins (5th round)
LF Holliday (2nd round)
CF Victorino
RF Stanton (Undrafted, so kept as last round pick I believe)
UTIL Ortiz
UTIL Kubel
BENCH Delmon Young (I believe he was undrafted as well, so next to last round pick/last round pick)
BENCH Lind
BENCH Alfonso Soriano
DL Youkilis (4th round)

SP Sabathia (3rd round)
SP Jimenez (11th round)
SP Bucholz (12th round)
SP Hamels (9th round)
SP Jurrjens
SP Vazquez
SP Kuroda
SP Arroyo
SP/RP Chapman
RP Broxton
RP Raf Soriano
RP Capps

I'll have to check with the league manager on how the second year of keepers would work (Delmon Young, Mike Stanton being kept as last round picks again)

I would definitely keep Holliday, CC and Ubaldo here. I'm not loving keeping Utley as a 1st rounder, but it's unlikely you'd be able to draft anyone better in the 1st round since everyone else will probably be kept.

For the 5th spot, I'd keep Youk if he has 3B eligibility. With just 1B, I'm not sure if he's worth it. I think Mike Stanton as a last rounder is a good deal. I would definitely take him over Buckholz.
