Best 3 out of 12?!?

Postby Wadderboiz » Tue Aug 17, 2010 11:54 am

8 team NL only keeper league. The number of players you can keep is based on your final position in the standings. Right now I'm 2nd and pushing for 1st. So 10 or 11 keepers.

I have to keep:
T. Lincecum
R. Braun
B. Phillips

That leaves 7 or 8 others out of the following (salary).
B. Posey($5) - 99% sure I'll keep.
A. McCutchen($5) - 99% sure I'll keep.

Which 3 would you keep from below? Keeping in mind I'm trying to maximize value. I tend to keep cheaper players so that I can have more $$$ for the draft.
I. Desmond($1)
A. Pagan($1)
J. Tabata($5)
A. Huff($1)
R. Franklin($7)
I. Kennedy($1)
D. Freese($1)
B. Penny($1)
R. Howard($44)
R. Zimmerman($29)
J. Reyes($27)
J. Santana($29)
B. Zito($10)
J. Chacin($10)

a lot of question marks on that list...kind of depends what you think will be available on draft day in your league as well. first off, i would certainly not keep santana at that price...there will be plenty of guys available who are as good next year for way less. chacin could be a good bet-hes looked strong this year, and next year i would be surprised to not see him as a pretty solid starter (would be lovely if he got traded to petco or something, but little chance of that). the big question is really whether you want to sink a lot of money into howard, reyes, zimmerman...those prices aren't unreasonable, but its hard to evaluate without knowing what comparable players are getting, because if you know that your leaguemates are going to be dropping some big SS/1B names then you can maybe do without keeping your guys. I will say that I like reyes and zimmerman both a lot for next year, and howard will be pretty much what you expect.

given that you say you prefer to keep cheaper players, id say lose howard but keep zimmerman--they have comparable numbers this year, but 1B is deeper in my opinion and that leaves you with some extra cash as well. reyes is going to be solid, so of your other high priced options id say him--if you dont want to keep more than one of those bigger guys, tabata has a lot of potential for $5, pagan at $1 is a steal for the multi-category help he gives you...like i said, depends who else you think is going to be out there for next year. overall, you have a lot of strong hitting options depending on how much you want to spend, id try and focus on those and then look for some solid SP early in the draft.

Knowing the cap and roster size would help.

Zimmerman for sure after that I don't know. It seems to me a 8 team league even NL-only is going to be pretty deep. For example take Desmond. If he isn't going to start for you then $1 isn't a bargain. Howard seems expensive at $44 but in shallow league the top players prices are always inflated. The two cheap guys I like a Pagan and Tabata. If you can afford it Howard and Reyes.

I like reyes and zimm at those prices best of your list... I'd probably grab pagan for a buck to round out the 3, and save some cash. Take with a grain of salt -- I've never played an auction or salaray league before.

Help with mine?

I agree with you - Posey and McCutchen @ $5 are great bargains and are MUST KEEP.

After that I'd go with the reasonable superstar prices of Ryan Zimmerman and Jose Reyes. Zimmerman just keeps getting better and he's already a .300 30 HR 3B. Reyes hasn't had his best year, but he looks to be getting back into form. His SB opportunities are WAY below career norms, but his success rate (78.8%) is right in line with what he has done historically (79.9% career). He's still hitting triples at roughly the same rate he did earlier in his career, but his BB% is down significantly from that of his best years (thus further limiting his SB opportunities).

From that I think we can safely conclude that all it will take for Reyes to return to his previous levels is:

A. An increased OBP fueled by a return to a 9 or 10% BB rate.
B. The manager (or in this case I believe it's the organization - protecting a prized asset) giving him the green light he had before his recent injury and illness.

Forgot to mention that I agree with others that Desmond is a great value at $1 if you've got a MI spot.
