10 team H2H non-keeper, pitching categories K/W/QS/ERA/WHIP/SVHD, had originally planned to drop marcum after his oakland start, since his remaining schedule is boston nyy and detroit over and over with a couple at baltimore towards the end of the season--now thinking about reconsidering given how good he looked at oakland and possibly even starting him against boston this week.
would you drop shaun marcum in favor of any of these? anibal sanchez-very good schedule the rest of the way, a few hiccups on the year but good numbers overall and looks strong lately jonathan niese-again, very easy schedule from here on out, and 7 of his last 9 have been QS r.a. dickey-best numbers of the bunch, but for some reason i have trouble buying in daniel hudson-the move to arizona clearly has agreed with him, he's 3-0 since and his worst start was 2 runs over 7 IP
other WW options-westbrook, lackey, volquez, de la rosa
oh and my pitching staff, for reference- josh johnson, jon lester, john danks, jair jurrjens, brett myers and i have jeremy hellickson rostered but will probably be dropping him for a bat if he goes to the pen or maybe use that spot for streamers
Go get Volquez...He was great prior to surgery and with the Reds pitching depth they took their time getting him back. He's fixed his issues and will get the most wins out of any of the players you mentioned.
i like volquez for next year, but if you look at his recent "good" starts i dont see too much to be encouraged by yet. IP H ER BB K 6.0 8 1 2 6 W 6.2 6 1 4 2 5.0 3 1 5 6 W
sure, hes 2-0...but a 14:11 K:BB is terrible, and his whip in these three starts is around 1.60, and before that its even worse. he had one good start against the rockies, where he struck out 9, but since then has put up one QS in 5 tries and walks as many as he Ks. the recent starts look good, but hes not keeping it up unless he gets his control back a bit, and i really just dont see it happening until the offseason-if he goes on a hot streak ill take another look, but i cant see liking him more than marcum, sanchez, or niese for this year.
djfoss...are you completely ignoring all those 1's in the ER column? And you're kind of downplaying the fact that he's won 2 of those 3 games. Maybe you missed the scoring categories...K/BB ratio is not one of them.
K/W/QS/ERA/WHIP/SVHD 14 ks in 3 starts is nothing to ignore especially considering the K potential he has. 2 wins in 3 starts and pitching for a contender with offense seems like another pro. If you're surrendering 1 run in 4 of your 6 starts since coming off TJ surgery I'd say the QS are going to rack up as the pitch count gets a little more lenient. ERA...see above 1 run in 4 of 6 starts.
None of the other mentioned pitchers are throwing for contenders.
not ignoring the 1s...just saying he cant expect to keep putting up low ERA numbers with the number of baserunners he allows, not to mention that with WHIP as a category hes a killer. the Ks are nice, but his K/9 isn't any better than plenty of those other guys (sanchez, niese) , so it's at best a slight pro. i agree that it would have been nice to have him for those starts, but if he's giving up 10 baserunners for every 6 innings, he wont give up 1 run a game and will be lucky to continue to last into the 6th or 7th inning. i agree he has potential, i love him for next year, but the guy has yet to have one game after his first one back where he looks at all in control...im not gonna pick him up for the wins and Ks alone, and he really does not help in any other category.
If you own Marcum then you know that his previous 2 starts against BOS were VERY good earlier in the season. I still wouldn't trust him against the Yankees, but against Boston (without Ellsbury and Youkilis) shouldn't be that bad. Plus his starts against the Orioles should be great. Detroit isn't exactly an offensive juggernaut either.
I'd stick with Marcum over all the guys you've mentioned. Volquez is a WHIP Killer.
yeah, im leaning towards that i think--especially since it looks more like hellickson wont be starting past friday, so i might just wait and use that spot for one of the other guys...see how marcum's start this weekend goes and play it from there.
