Who to keep for next year? WHIR 100%

Postby onitapgr » Mon Aug 16, 2010 1:13 pm

12 team roto 5x5 standard cats...keep any 10 players as long as you want...

I have 6 definite keepers, but who from the list below should make up the last 4 keeper spots?

Any help greatly appreciated...Will help in return 100%!

Could also offer some trades in the offseason......

6 Definite keepers are:

Mark Teixeira (NYY - 1B)
Robinson Canó (NYY - 2B)
Troy Tulowitzki (Col - SS)
Josh Hamilton (Tex - OF)
Zack Greinke (KC - SP)
Stephen Strasburg (Was - SP)

Other 4 possible keepers are:

Adrián Béltre (Bos - 3B) will he stay in Boston? if so, I think a definite keeper
Mark Reynolds (Ari - 1B,3B) if he can bat .260, he would be great
Carlos Santana (Cle - C) knee surgery on a catcher = not good for next year?
Michael Cuddyer (Min - 1B,3B,OF) Morneau should be back....value will go down?
Starlin Castro (ChC - SS) solid BA, but not extraordinary other stats
Corey Hart (Mil - OF) good possibility to keep...
Rajai Davis (Oak - OF) the top speedsters will be hard to find on draft day
Adam Lind (Tor - OF) seems to be turning around...a repeat of 2009 would be great
Ricky Nolasco (Fla - SP) high k rate, low walk rate, but gives up too many home runs, I think he is on the brink of ace status
Jonathan Sánchez (SF - SP) high K rate, high walk rate too.....
Brian Wilson (SF - RP) all the top closers will be unavailable on draft day....
Francisco Cordero (Cin - RP) all the top closers will be unavailable on draft day....

Sure bets:

Mark Reynolds - for his elite power, should have a better year next year than this year BA wise

Brian Wilson - If all top closers are gone, he's a fringe top 8 closer

Corey Hart - Too big of a year not to keep (I just traded him so he's a good sell high too)

Question Marks
Adam Lind - Good player but I'm worried the bottom will drop out. Upside is probably a cross between this season and last.
or
Starlin/Carlos Santana - Both have big upside, Santana has higher ceiling but Starlin has no injury woe
or
Ricky Nolasco - As a former owner, I can't cosign this guy but he's been pretty decent since I parted ways with him.

I'd follow Carlos Santana's injury and wait til he has a good recovery. Once he does I'd pick Santana as my last keeper, unless Starlin goes crazy for the rest of the year. If Santana stays hurt and Starlin stays the same or streaks downward; then take Lind. But don't make a final decision until the deadline for declaring keepers. In my league, that's not til next spring.

Unlike most of the people above, im not sure that Beltre will be great next year. I view him kind of as an Aubrey Huff who i also think will decline next year. Let him get drafted early but if you can get him in a slightly later round take him. I like both Nolasco and Sanchez, the only thing that concerns me is that i was fairly sure that Nolasco's rise to acedom would be this year. I dont love that he didnt have the best of years and i traded him fairly early. Cuddyers value shouldnt go down, he will be in a better offense and his dual eligibility is really an asset. Dont love Santana, knee surgery is scary for a young catcher. Leave him. I know i just highlighted a few but i hope combining this with the advice of others will help. Thanks for your help on mine

Are there plenty of bench slots? I say this because I don't really see any of your lesser options as all that compelling and seeing you can keep players as long as you want I'd give serious thought to retaining Carlos Santana. Even if you have to bench him it gets you a year to figure out how well he recovered and what did you lose really, a chance to keep someone like Hart or Sanchez? With 10 keeper slots I'd probably roll the dice on the huge potential upside Santana possesses rather than keeping an extra guy who'll never be a true impact stud. There will Sanchez type pitchers claimed off waivers in your league next year.

Reynolds, Beltre, Sanchez and Wilson with Santana being the first out, injury or no injury.

Beltre will be a solid player wherever he ends up next year. His numbers in Seattle were pretty crappy but Safeco is hell for right handed power hitters.

No reason not to keep Wilson and Cordero both are signed and secured closers. That's one less category you have to draft.

Corey Hart is keeper #3

#4 Beltre but only if he signs a short term contract 1 or 2 years. Only seems to have big years in a contract year. Otherwise I'd say Reynolds.

agreed with hart, beltre, reynolds maybe although if you have beltre i wouldn't, id say castro and santana instead-sure, santana's injury was bad for this year but id be surprised to see it affect him much next year and even if it does, hes a guy who will be a top 5 catcher for the next 5 years in my opinion. castro had some bumps early on, but i would expect him to have a stronger 2nd year, and shortstop is weak overall--i would look for him to increase the steals, pick up a little power--that said, if you dont have a MI spot in your league you probably should get rid of him because tulo is obviously a better starter.

also, you say there wont be closers available on draft day...id still drop mine because id rather keep hitters that will help across the board offensively and take a slight hit in saves--compare the closers that were drafted 1-5 with the ones that were the last 5 drafted this year and there isnt generally a whole lot of difference. would much rather have good hitting and starting pitching and have to make do with weaker relievers than use a keeper spot on a closer and be scrambling for a hitter in the draft, especially given the quality of your other guys in a 12 team. i would love to drop closers and watch my leaguemates waste high picks on them, so dont worry too much about that...they just dont have enough impact on enough categories to be worth the investment.
