H2H 12-team mixed Yahoo League. I'm in first place and should have a playoff spot essentially locked up, so I'm more concerned about who to keep for the playoffs than the short term. Here's the roster:
C - Brian McCann 1B - Prince Fielder 2B - Gordon Beckham 3B- David Wright SS - Jose Reyes OF - Matt Holliday, Carlos Gonzalez, Alex Rios Util - Billy Butler, Colby Rasmus BN - B.J. Upton, Mike Stanton DL - Chase Utley
SP - John Lester, Francisco Liriano RP - Brian Fuentes, Joel Hanrahan P - David Price, Clay Buchholz, John Axford, Mike Gonzalez BN - Ricky Nolasco, Brett Anderson, Jonathon Niese
I just picked Niese up because he's got two good starts in the upcoming week (I had Hellickson but he'll be sent down soon so I dropped him), so I'm not dropping him. I'll probably also pick Madison Bumgarner back up if I can, I just recently dropped him to grab a waiver claim on Butler. So I'm leaning towards dropping a reliever and a position player for Utley and Bumgarner.
I'm so deep at OF (if you're wondering how I have so many round 1-3 type picks, I actually got Utley and Holliday in the same deal about a month ago knowing 2B was a weakness, but also that I was in first place and that I could afford to overpay for an injured Utley for a playoff run. Wound up dealing Kershaw, Hart, and Leo Nunez for Utley, Holliday, and Fuentes) I'm thinking I'll probably drop Stanton, despite how red hot he's been. Bad idea? Should I drop Butler or Rasmus instead? Should I just rely on Utley and Wright despite some risk with both and drop Beckham?
As far as the reliever, a few days ago I'd probably have dropped Axford, but Hoffman is back to struggling again so maybe I'll drop Gonzalez, though I'm pretty convinced he'll be closing for the O's come September and they've been playing really well lately. I think he has some sneaky late-season upside despite his low ownership rate. Other SP I could pick up instead of Bumgarner are Travis Wood, Jhoulys Chacin, Jeff Niemann, and Edinson Volquez. Any of them clearly better than MadBum?

first of all, it's pretty obvious why you're in 1st place in your league!

that's a good call. i have hellickson right now and want to make absolutely sure he won't get another start before i drop him and pick-up Niese again (re: I had him for about a month until very recently). So yeah. Good move.

Good play on Butler. I'd wait before dropping a reliever though. The Brewers' best option for the closer role is Axford. I snagged him immediately when the Hoffman demotion was inevitable way back when (just like I picked up Kuo immediately after Broxton's recent dramatic screw-up in Philly) and have no intention of letting him go unless he has several back-to-back disaster outings.
If I was going to drop a position player, it'd definitely be Rasmus or Stanton. I have Stanton and have no intention of dropping him anytime soon myself, but my situation is different than yours. The reality is that, barring some kind of injury, it's unlikely that you'll use those two given the dominance of your OF.
Should I just rely on Utley and Wright despite some risk with both and drop Beckham?
I would drop Beckham the moment it's confirmed that Utley will walk onto the field next week. David Wright is terrible right now. If Chris Johnson is available in your league, I would make the move to get him immediately. Casey McGehee is a better option if he's available (since he plays 2B and 3B), but he's probably been nabbed if someone's dropped him recently.

I've had Niemann all year and am pretty satisfied. Low ERA which eats innings, tends to win his quality starts. I don't think that MadBum is necessarily any better (he's available in my league now), but that's just me.
Maybe its just me, but I think BJ Upton or Gordon Beckham are your weakest links on offense and for arms, Gonzalez or Niese would get axed for Volquez/Wood/MadBum
The best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be!
Thanks for the reply. You're probably right, I should be patient with the relievers, there are enough decent starters available and Bumgarner isn't necessarily any better than the rest of them. I've had Axford for a few months too, but the reason I worry about him Axford is because the Brewers have so little left to play for, I'm pretty sure they'll try to get Hoffman at least three more saves to get him to 600, even if he struggles. He had been pitching better but now he's had a couple of bad outings. If I had to guess right now, I'd still take Gonzalez as the safer play for September. He already looks like a better option than Simon, has more experience, and he also has the guaranteed contract, so there's little reason to hold him back for long. The O's have already begun using Simon in the 8th inning so I'm pretty convinced the job is already pretty much Gonzalez's.

I actually snagged Chris Johnson in an NL-only league right when he was promoted (I own Wright in that league too), but I don't really feel like I need him here. I don't see why he's any better than Beckham (who also has 3B eligibility, at least in Yahoo leagues). Since the break Beckham has hit .363 / .427 / .604 with 10 BBs and 17 Ks. Johnson has hit .420 / .445 / .680, but with just 6 BBs an 21 Ks. Plus Beckham actually has the higher OPS so far in August, and the ZiPS ROS projection has them basically even in average, but with Beckham having a decent edge in both OBP and SLG, which combined with better lineup support should lead to better counting totals. The second base insurance, stronger BB/K, stronger projection, not to mention better prospect pedigree makes me feel better about keeping Beckham. The ISO is pretty much the same, all Johnson really has is a higher BABIP, which is clearly unsustainable. McGehee isn't available, unfortunately.
Also, I'm pretty sure Hellickson's slated to make one more start, which will be in Oakland (making it a positive matchup for him), but after that Joe Maddon has already announced that Niemann and Davis will get their spots back and Hellickson will be demoted. Niese is a two start pitcher this week and he pitches in Houston and Pittsburgh. He matches up against Wandy, which in Houston is a pretty neutral matchup, but at Pittsburgh is at least as good as Hellboy @ Oakland. I don't really need to dominate this week, but hey, the sooner I can clinch a spot and possibly a bye in the first week of the playoffs the better.

Like Beckham, Upton is actually showing some signs of life. I don't think I can drop him. First, he has stolen 33 bases so far and scored 62 runs, that gives him some value right off the bat even with the low average (especially considering he's hit 10 HR, which isn't great but isn't anemic either like a lot of the other major speed threat outfielders). Second, he's hit .275 / .392 / .532 vs. LHP this year, so I always get him into my lineup when a lefty starts. Third, he's hitting .264 / .346 / .451 since the break and is hitting .320 / .404/ .540 so far in August. Fourth, I like having him as an extra speed threat.
Thinking about it now actually, having Upton and Stanton actually makes some sense to me. If it were a roto league I'd probably keep Rasmus, but in a H2H league, I can just play matchups with them through Wednesday or Thursday every week, and then decide whether I would be better served trying to play the rest of my week for HR and RBIs or SBs and Runs. Rasmus is better than either across the board, but he doesn't have either's upside in the cats they're strong in, so his day-to-day production is less predictable.
Also, thanks for the responses guys, I'll definitely think through the suggestions. And if anyone else responds and you want me to take a look at your post, a link would be preferred, though I'm not above digging through your post history to see if you have anything recent .
