I've been offered the following deal in my 14 team roto keeper. we keep 5 at the cost of their draft round value (in brackets), standard 5x5 categories.
I give: Tim Lincecum (rd 5) Evan Longoria (16)
I get: Joey Votto (4) Justin Verlander (8) Clayton Kershaw (9) Jose Bautista (24)
I'm in second place right now, but the first place team is well ahead (nearly 20 points separate us). This deal gives me a short term boost because Longoria and Lincecum are both struggling, but it also gives me some nice long term options. Thing is, it would make narrowing my keepers down to 5 a very tough decision. Also, it would be very tough giving up Longoria, who has been the cornerstone of my team for a few years now.
My questions:
1. Should I do this deal? why? 2. If I accept, which 5 players on my updated roster would you keep?
My Team (current keeper round values in brackets)
C - Buster Posey (12) 1B - Derrek Lee 2B - Brandon Phillips SS - Starlin Castro (24) 3B - Evan Longoria (16) IF - Nick Swisher LF - Matt Holliday CF - Adam Jones RF - Andre Ethier Util - Adam Lind (14) BN - Angel Pagan BN - Mike Lowell
SP - Tim Lincecum (5) SP - Javier Vazquez SP - Tim Hudson RP - Heath Bell RP - Jose Valverde RP - Matt Capps P - Gavin Floyd P - Johnny Venters P - Matt Thornton BN - Edinson Volquez BN - Madison Bumgarner BN - Josh Beckett

Absolutely do it. I think. You're getting quite a bit more than what you're giving up in my opinion 5 to keep: Kershaw, Verlander, Votto, Phillips and then pick between Bautista (if you think the power is real), Pagan, Ethier or Castro. Sorry, but I have a touch choice going between those last 4. It's a nice looking team. Maybe you can look to put some of your guys together (after the trade) and maybe give up 2-3 players for 1 big time guy. Do that before you go thinking about keepers - you have plenty of players worth keeping
I don't think I could do it. Lincecum is still good value as a 5th rounder but Longoria as a 16th rounder is insane. I don't think I could ever give that up. You would be getting some good guys back, but none are really huge bargains, except for Bautista, but people are still up in the air if he can repeat.
I still think for long term, Lince/Longo is the best combo, especially with some of your other choices you have to keep.
ensanimal makes a good point. The round value for Longoria really popped out at me too. How can Longoria be equated with the 16th round??? Is that a misprint??? I would keep Longoria and Lincecum, personally.
C- Santana 1B - Huff 2B - Wigginton 3B - Longoria SS - Tulowitzki OF - Posednik OF - Suzuki OF - J. Upton DH - Lind Bench: C. Pena, Morneau, Prado, Bay, Barmes SP: Oswalt, Hammels, Nolasco, Weaver, Shields, Lackey, Vargas, Volquez RP: Soriano, Perez
I have to agree with the last comment. Long term, you aren't really going to beat the Longoria/Lincecum package. Votto and Longoria are both young guys that can rake, but I'd rather have a 3b of Longoria's talents with a 16th round tab on him. And I would rather have Lincecum than either Kershaw or Verlander. Thing is, all these guys together makes it hard to say either way. If you really are more concerned with the keeper aspect of the trade, you won't want to lose Longo and Lincecum, but if you think that you can catch first place, the trade will help a lot in the short term. In the end, I guess I would probably do it (with a sigh), and spend the next few seasons scared to check Longoria's box scores so I don't have to be confronted with his break out year.
Yeah. Gotta say I was kinda shocked by all the 'yes' votes on this deal... Both longo and lincy were grabbed much later then they ought to have been. And in a 14-teamer? I can't even make sense of that. None of what you were getting back is so exciting to make losing the 2 first-round-quality studs worth letting go, to say nothing of the extra picks (you keep 9 of the top 10, and the top 4 without doing this deal.)
