Catcher Trade - REALLY Need Advice WHIR always

Postby bobnerns » Wed Aug 11, 2010 11:19 pm

First, I apologize because this is a bit long and involved, but I need some advice.

The trade deadline is this Friday for my league (10-team, 5x5, H2H, redraft). I have two catchers on my roster and want to trade one away. I need help deciding what to do. Any trade I plan to make will only involve offensive players. Our league starts 13 offense, 9 pitchers, 3 bench, 1 DL.

My team:
C - V Martinez, Montero (UTIL)
1B - Cabrera
2B - Weeks
3B - Sandoval
SS - Rollins
MI - B Roberts
CI - Berkman
OF - Hamilton, Pence, Adam Jones, Choo, Lind (just picked up)
Bench/DL - Manny Ramirez, Bay, Utley

Team A said he was interested in trading for Miguel Montero. I told him I would trade Montero for Denard Span. Is this a decent trade for me? Should I try to get something more?

Team A roster:
C - Olivo
1B - Votto
2B - K Johnson
3B - Longoria
SS - Aybar
MI - Uribe
CI - Huff
OF - Suzuki, Abreu, Dunn, C Young, Torres
UTIL - Ortiz
Bench - Span, A Jackson, Glaus

I have no interest in Johnson, Aybar, or Uribe. He won't trade Votto or Longoria. I'd love to get Huff or Dunn but would obviously need to offer more than just Montero. Any suggestions?

Team B said he was mildly interested in Victor Martinez. I've been trying to trade him for Fielder all season. Also, one of his favorite players is Shin-Soo Choo, who he owned before he was injured, then dropped Choo when the news was Choo would be out 6-8 weeks.

Team B roster:
C - Arencibia
1B - Gonzalez
2B - Phillips
3B - Zimmerman
SS - Jeter
MI - Figgins
CI - Fielder
OF - Crawford, Hunter, Hart, Ludwick, Ross
UTIL - D Lee
Bench/DL - Victorino, Ordonez

My first thought is Martinez and Choo for Fielder, but I don't know if that would be accepted. And the only ones I'd want from his team are Fielder and/or outfielders.

So I really need some help deciding what to do and what to offer. Who should I trade away, Montero or Martinez?

Leave your link and I will absolutely help you.

Montero seems to be heating up (another hr tonight)
He should definitely fetch you more than Span. I don't think Huff would be out of the question at all although Dunn you would probably need to add more.

I think VMart will fetch you more because of his name value so I'd look to deal him. If you can land Fielder for VMart/Choo that would be awesome. It may just work because Prince has been underperforming all year (make sure you emphasize this when sending the offer). Choo and Prince have basically been on par this season as far as there yahoo rank.

If he asks you to sweeten the offer a bit more I think you have some room to move too.

I agree with the previous poster - If you can get Fielder for V-Mart/Choo, jump on it. Definitely bring up Fielder's relatively tame season. And yeah, don't trade Montero for Span. You can do better than that.

If you don't end up trading, there are worse things than having 2 catchers on your roster. They tend to rest a lot, and in daily leagues if you're willing to check every day you can make sure you've got someone actually starting. Also, catchers get hurt. Seems like they hit the DL more regularly than others, so having a backup on your team just make sense. In one 2-catcher league I've got Montero/Soto/Posey, and when Soto went down I could still start Montero and Posey every day.

I don't think i'd trade Miguel...definitely shop Victor.

I think the previous posters are underappreciating Choo. I'd keep him and try trading elsewhere.

Maybe Victor and Brian Roberts for Dunn...the Dunn team could use another MI...and you have Utley and Weeks (though both seem to get banged up). Seems like you may even be overpaying a bit but I'm not sure on Roberts from here on out doing much of anything.
