Catcher help. *WHIR*

Postby StealingHome » Tue Aug 10, 2010 11:46 am

Injuries at the catcher spot have really hurt me this season. The injury to Santana was icing on the cake. I have Soto on the DL. Who should I run with in the meantime? How do you rank the following for the rest of the season?

Olivo (I can't stand his bad splits.)
Posada (He hasn't shown a lot of productivity.)
Yorvit Torrealba
John Jaso
Carlos Ruiz
J.P. Arencibia

Thanks for your help! WHIR

1. Arencibia -- Dude can rake, and he should get plenty of playing time for the out of contention Blue Jays. Don't be surprised if he's a top 10 catcher next year. This one's a no brainer and easily the best choice of this list.

2. John Jaso - solid player in a great lineup. You could do worse.

3. Jorge Posada - Hasn't been real productive lately, but when in doubt, go with the Yankee Lineup.

4. Miguel Olivo - He's been solid throughout the year, but Ianetta stealing some playing time and his bad splits are a cause for concern.

The other two shouldn't even be considered. Hope this helps!

I actually disagree with your take on Arencibia. I do agree that he will be a top 10 catcher in the near future but I think he's going to split time for the rest of this year and this lack of volume in plate appearances will impede his value. Even with Buck hurt, he's splitting time with Jose Molina, so what happens when Buck comes back?

They have a crowded lineup as is with Lind who is essentially locked into the DH spot because he's such a terrible fielder. Travis Snider is also pushing for playing time. So I don't see Arencibia getting many starts at DH. I do see them shuffling their lineup after the season is over to make room for him obviously.

The OP's question was posed for this year only as the time frame, that's important to remember.

When are people going to get it through their heads that Carlos Ruiz turns it ON every August-October. He's been a savior for the Phillies recently, not just behind the plate calling the games, but next to the plate when he's at bat. We've been missing just about everybody, and Carlos knows when he has to step it up.

I called it a week ago, and I'll say it again. Ruiz is swinging perhaps the hottest bat of any Phillie right now, and is definitely own-able in a pinch. I would rather have Ruiz than anyone on that list you gave except for maybe Posada. Olivo has reached his peak, and is only going to go down. People are putting too much stock into his first half stats and assuming he'll continue that pace. He won't. Maybe you can catch lightning in a bottle with Arencibia, but I'd rather take Ruiz.
(In reference to an Aaron Hill for David Price swap)

Carlos Ruiz has been good the past few days compared to a lot of the catchers. I'm staying with Ruiz as long as possible. Olivo gave me good stuff in the beginning ever since Montero got injured.
