JP Arencibia - Is he an instant pickup?

Postby waltb87 » Sat Aug 07, 2010 4:01 pm

I see this kid just got the start today with the call up a few days ago...so far he is 4/5 with 2hrs and 3rbi....is he immediately a pick up in all leagues...or wait and see because James Shields has been pretty terrible most of the season? He was lighting up in the minors

Not unless you have a lot of free space in your roster, or you plan to hold on to him past the end of the season. Blue Jays have gone with Jose Molina tonight, so playing time is the biggest issue for him, especially as Buck is due back later this month.

I'd take him over some guys like Kurt Suzuki, but I think right now you clearly have: Mauer, McCann, Martinez, Posey, and even Soto as superior options. If you don't have one of those 5, it is worth thinking about . . . Arencibia strikes me as very similar to Mike Napoli. He'll end up striking out a lot, not walking often, and he'll have a lot of power for a catcher. A .250/20 HR/60 RBI line is nothing to sneeze at, but this isn't the second coming of Mike Piazza.

In a keeper league, he's worth a pickup, but I think he's not an incredibly valuable property given his limitations as a hitter. I would rate Mauer, McCann, Martinez, Posey, C. Santana, and (maybe) Soto ahead of him in a keeper.

Wieters too.

Plus there are other prospects (Bryce Harper, Christian Betancourt, Jesus Montero, and Wilson Flores who all have great potential as well)

It depends on who you had at catcher to begin with and who is available?

If you have a free roster spot I don't see the hurt in stashing him.
The best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be!
