Relievers most likely to vulture some wins? WHIR!

Postby Oatsdad » Fri Aug 06, 2010 7:41 pm

Due to snakebitten luck in one of my roto leagues, I'm dead last in wins and losses. (Kinda fits, I guess!)

I think I actually have a solid cast of SPs - they've just not produced the necessary wins:

-Scherzer
-Gallardo
-Oswalt
-Niemann
-Hernandez

This is a closer-heavy league - I have 5 closers, and I'm doing fine there; they're helping me stay at or near the top in saves, Ks, and ERA; WHIP isn't quite as good, but at least it's middle of the pack.

I keep waiting for the logical adjustment to occur and watch my Ws rise and Ls fall, but it hasn't happened yet.

I figured it'd help if I grabbed a reliever who wouldn't eat many innings - I'm riding right around the projected max - and get me the occasional W.

I grabbed Jose Contreras, mostly because he has SP/RP eligibility; that means I can play him AND all five of my closers.

Madson was tempting, but he doesn't have the SP eligibility.

Any other thoughts, or is Contreras my best bet?

Brandon League and Tyler Clippard currently each have 8 wins as relievers. As a thought, you want people who pitch on teams where they can pick up a poor starter (the Brewers spring to mind - all bats and no starters). I think I'd be more inclined to try and get a starter on a team that might give him run support - that seems like it's been your problem this year, and then spot the 6 starters so that you don't necessarily have to pitch them when they have nasty matchups.

Thanks for the reply. Clippard is gone in this league - and he's fallen into the toilet anyway. League is a definite thought, and I may eventually go to him.

Really want someone with that SP eligibility, though, so I can keep my five closers in the lineup. Saves are a REALLY competitive category in this league!

Your idea about having the six starters and going more on a spot basis is intriguing. I might wanna try that closer to the end of the year - right now I really want to score some cheap wins with as few innings as possible! :-o

Anyone else?
