I hope this is an appropriate forum.

First, I am not a commissioner, but I have a question about ethics and figured commissioners were the best person to ask.

I am in a 12 person 5 X 5 roto keeper league. The keeper system is such. Josh Beckett was drafted in the fourth round. If I choose him as a keeper, I lose 2011's 4th round draft pick.

We use a FAAB free agency system, so no waivers. Bids are completed twice a week, at midnight EST.

So, theoretically, I could drop Josh Beckett 15 minutes before the deadline, then bid to pick him up for X amount of dollars. He would then, by league rules, only cost me a 20th round draft pick next year.

Is this something that would be considered ethical, or strategic?

I use both ESPN and CBS for my Fantasy Leagues. On both when a player is dropped there is a period before he can be picked up. The normal time period is one day. A player would have to be dropped at least one full day before the FAAB ran in order to be included in it. The reason for that is the situation that you describe. If your league does not have the one day period set, it needs to do this. It will stop any "hanky-panky".

That's horribly unethical. There should either be a system with a waiting period (of at least one day) like bigmck described, or a rule where the person who dropped the player can't bid on him (waivers work this way in most leagues).
