That, quite literally, is what Prop 8 was about: "only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California." Of course, the Proposition pertained only to California, but this ruling (if it stands) could set national precedence.
Well it will be appealed to the 9th. Then SCOTUS.
This ruling only really sets a precedent in the Northern District of California.
Right. By "if it stands" I meant if it is upheld on appeal. I'm assuming this will go to the Supreme Court eventually.

This wasn't directed toward me, but I have a moment so I'll respond anyway...the connection between marriage and procreation is correlative at best, not causative. Sure, many people don't have children until they are married--and there are numerous reasons for that--but marriage has absolutely nothing to do with the biological act of procreation. I'm not saying anything you don't know here, so I guess I'm just confused as to why you think marriage and having children have some kind of 1:1 link. Also, although gay couples can't "naturally" conceive a child together, gay people are just as capable of having children as straight people. It's not as if there is some kind of gay gene that disables to ability to procreate.

You do know that marriage isn't simply a method to procreate, right? 'Cause if not I should tell you - and this might come as a shock, so sit down - people have babies without getting married. I've seen the science behind this and it's totally true.

i've even heard of people getting married and NOT having babies

Pretty sure the comment was made to show that life isn't fair.
The Artful Dodger wrote:Even then, a lot of people in this state don't have a clear-cut opinion of legalizing/banning gay marriage
Actually, most of what I read says the majority of the country supports legalizing "civil unions", it is the changing of the definition of "marriage" as to where the problem is.
Good luck having an adult conversation about the topic here though, didn't even take 2 pages for people to spin comments and make the thread pointless.

It's even theoretically possible for a marriage where one or both of them are unable to have children. I've also never received a satisfactory explanation why sterile people should be allowed to marry the opposite sex but gay people aren't.

So why shouldn't we try to make it fair? Or in this case, why should we actively try to keep it unfair?
How is approving civil unions unfair and why must we change the definition of "marriage" in order to make it fair? Doesn't make any sense.
knapplc wrote:Pretty sure it wasn't.
Then go back and read it again. The word "marriage" wasn't even mentioned. Wait, here you go:
Yeah, and how come only straight couples can make babies? Nature's nothing but a bigoted homophobe.
How does anyone make the leap that the above reads anything close to "marriage is only for having babies"?
