Ive always just thought of Barry Zito as a mediocre pitcher at best, but seems to have turned it around this year which is odd because he is only getting older... Is he doing something different this year than in the past? Is he reliable to start the remainder of the season and possibly even a must-start every time out kinda guy?

I can't imagine you thought this from 2000 - 2003. ;-)

He's been a tad lucky, but he's pitching well this year. I want to recall that he finished last year pretty well too (it's almost midnight, I'm not gonna double check that). I wouldn't call him a must start (not that you did), but I think he'll be pretty good to throw out there more often than not for the rest of '10.

Yeah, I've just started enjoying baseball within the past 5 years and I don't know his history well :-b

And yes last year he did finish well: pre-all star 5.01 ERA. post-all star 2.87 ERA.

So did he change something about his mechanics that would make a permanent improvement? (For this year at least)

There has been some in depth analysis on FanGraphs and Hardball Times. One thing I remember is he went back to throwing a shorter slider which he has better control over and sets up his other pitches better. Other than that you can tell the guy has the mind and guts of a champion. Whatever adversity he comes across, he seems to eventually tame.

Zito has been bouncing back some this year. He will never be the pitcher he was back in his early days though.

He's always been great in the second half, even during his crappy seasons.
