Drop S. Drew for Chris Davis? WHIR

Postby Montana168 » Wed Jul 28, 2010 4:36 pm

Yahoo! Dynasty League 10-team H2H Standard 5x5 cats.

My team is currently in 3rd place and Chris Davis (1b/3b Tex) was dropped and passed through waivers. My question is, should I grab him for my bench and drop stephen drew? drew has been awful this yr but he still has 19 doubles and 7 triples on the yr which means he's hitting the ball hard but he's just not hitting homers (only 4 HR on the yr). I don't need a 1b or 3b and drew is my backup for Andrus when he gets an off day, but that only comes maybe once every other week and thats if I catch it before game time. Other than off days, Drew never sees time in my starting lineup, whereas Davis, if he breaks out, I could play at UTIL and move Huff to OF3.

Here is my roster:

C Miguel Montero
1b Mark Teixiera
2b Brandon Phillips
3b Alex Rodriguez
SS Elvis Andrus
OF Matt Kemp
OF Matt Holliday
OF Adam Lind
UTIL Ryan Zimmerman
UTIL Aubrey Huff
BN OF Brennan Boesch
BN 1b Logan Morrison
BN SS Stephen Drew
BN OF Carlos Beltran

SP CC Sabathia
SP Justin Verlander
RP Mariano Rivera
RP Andrew Bailey
P Carlos Marmol
P Rafael Soriano
P Matt Capps
BN Dan Haren
BN Yovani Gallardo
BN Gavin Floyd
BN Clayton Richard
BN Brandon Morrow
BN Kris Medlen
BN Wade LeBlanc
BN Joba Chamberlain (stashing for when Mo retires)
BN Jeremy Hellickson
DL Derek Holland
DL Jordan Zimmerman
DL Joe Nathan

As always, leave a link and I will help u out, Thanks.

Haha, good point. I guess my question would be, who do you think has the potential to have a better final 2 months? Davis has clearly flashed the 30+ HR power in the bigs, but he has also shown that he K's way too much and is stuggling this yr. I know this seems like a small move but I have been flip-flopping on the idea all day and I know he is not going to last on the wire much longer because it is a deep league and his name alone will attract someone to stash him. He was raking in AAA, but is he just another AAAA hitter? If Texas traded for Cantu (which is looking unlikely) then Davis is not ownable, but right now he is the everyday 1b with loads of power potential.

whilst stephen drew fizzled out after a decent start (he was like .300/4/28 at one point methinks? albeit the power wasn't what everyone hoped... the kid will likely never live up to his draft hype) and he is useless on a fantasy squad, i wholeheartedly refuse to endorse chris davis for anything... i mean maybe he'd be a good waiter at denny's, but at this point i'm not convinced. he'd prolly look like a great waiter in training sessions then when he's on the floor he fizzles out... gets sent back to training. comes back and waits tables for a few good months... then goes on vacation, comes back, and he can't wait tables. and then he goes back to training, comes back, and still sucks'?

yeah. in other words, give me some other free agents out there plz... i can prolly help you with some insight but not with chris davis. and if you're betting on a "better rest of the season" from stephen drew or chris davis, well, man, remember that bench players accrue no stats.

As far as Vet batters go, there is...Josh Willingham, Ryan Ludwick, and Marlon Byrd. As far as Young/Upside batters go, there is....Chris Johnson (Hou), Jon Jay (STL), Chris Davis. JP Arencibia is also there, and if John Buck is traded before the deadline then I would grab Arencibia in a heartbeat with Montero slumping, but who knows if buck will be traded or not.

If LudwicK & Byrd are FA's its not really a deep league. I'd start either before I'd try the strikeout king Davis. Someone will probably pick up Davis after a good game but I don't think you are missing out on much

I also said it is a dynasty league so young guys are highly coveted and old guys are looked at as junk. Ludwick platoons with jon jay and colby rasmus, marlon byrd has 10 hr. Sure, ludwick and byrd are solid OF4/5 in redrafts, but in a dynasty, not so much. I'm not sure the availability of those two guys defines what is or is not a deep league, but thanks for the opinion.

I think I am going to hold on off on Davis for now and hope no one picks him up and just keep monitoring him. Seems to be pretty much hate on Davis, which is understandable, but anyone with 35+hr/5+ sb ability is a must moniter type of guy to me. But the criticism is most certainly warranted as Davis has yet to hit a HR in the majors yet this yr. :-P

Yup, thats correct. Guess i should have made that part bigger in my original post. We keep our entire 30-man roster every yr and we are in our 3rd year of the league. We also have a 2-round draft for rookies/free agents at the start of every season based on the prior season's finish in the standings.

I'd rather have Byrd > Willimngham > Ludwick than Davis. Thanks.
