So I have been working on a trade to upgrade at 3B while adding some youth to my roster. I have been working on a trade to sell Johan to another team in the playoff chase and he has finally come to me with a fair offer.

He proposed to send:
Aramis Ramirez
Aroldis Chapman
Alex Sanabia

in exchange for my:
Johan Santana
Carlos Pena

While this offer might prove detrimental to my rotation in the short-term, I strongly feel that this offer improves my squad in the long-term. First and foremost, I upgrade at 3B over my Teahen/Hinske platoon and Chapman should be as good or even better than Johan as early as next season. I have never been a huge fan of Pena and I have the positional flexibility to play Dunn or LaPorta at 1B.

This deal should improve my overall team performance, and with Webb set to return in a month or two, and with Arrieta losing farm club-eligibility after his next start or two, I don't really feel it should prove as detrimental to my rotation as it may seem.

What are your thoughts on the deal? Would you accept this deal if you were in my shoes? I could always put together a subsequent deal to address my rotation.

If I were you, I might consider looking for a different pitching prospect. Even though Chapman is a top prospect, there might be a better player with less hype that can be had at a lower value. I really like the idea of trading for Aramis right now, and moving Dunn to first lessens the loss of Pena, but Pena isn't awful, especially in a league with OPS. Personally, I'd go after more if you can but I don't know how much value prospects have in your league.
All in all, I think you have the right idea. Trading Santana is a good idea right now and getting a buy low guy like Aramis will help your offense.

Aramis is getting age on him. He can still produce, but getting Aramis isn't the upgrade you should seek. I would go after Ian Stewart or if your dealing Santana you need to get a younger 3b in the deal back to you, perhaps Zimmerman. Can you sign anyone in the most recent draft to your minors now? I would definitely play someone at 3b who is playing everyday. :).

Agreed, a 3b would help but someone who skill set and value will only decrease with his age. If Aramis were in his 20s, I'd go for it, but at this point....a 32 year old to me doesn't show much signs of ever really improving, despite his recent streaks and 3 homer night. Would you want to own Chipper these days?

If you want to buy low on someone how about Gordon Beckham? He's been turning it around and he's way younger. He has 3b elgibility I'm sure in your league for this year, and perhaps the way things roll out I think he'll slide over there for good after this season. I suspect they will sign Orlando Hudson, Kelly Johnson or the like to play 2b...

If you like having Braves players, is Brooks Conrad available in your league. I think he might get a chance to play everyday next year. He's shown some power. What about buying low on Chone Figgins? Not the biggest upgrade, but could potentially help you.

Brandon Wood in FA? He's sucked so far, but might be worth stashing in a super deep league. Trading for Martin Prado would be a good risk/reward move to make - he should be playing 3b next year.

Buying low on Kung Fu Panda - another good target.

Aramis is tempting, this would be a deal I'd make in a redraft, but in your long term league I cannot abide this move. Sorry.

Only a proven, less-than-thirty stud 3b would I move Santana for. There's a bit of the yoda-jussive case. :)
The best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be!
