DYNASTY LEAGUE: Trade Miggy Cabrera?

Postby DC4MVP » Fri Jul 23, 2010 4:32 pm

I'm in a 10 team dynasty league. I took over the last place team to begin the season. We started out great but have faded terribly the last few weeks.

This is my team:

C-Ivan Rodriguez
1b- Miguel Cabrera
2b- Ben Zobrist
3b- Adrian Beltre
SS- Rafeal Furcal
2b/ss-Martin Prado
1b/3b-Jorge Cantu
LF-Delmon Young
CF-Denard Span
RF-Magglio Ordonez
OF-Cody Ross
OF-Franklin Gutierrez
Utility-Chase Headley
Bench-Orlando Hudson (2B)
Bench- Juan Uribe (2b, ss, 3b)
Bench- Angel Pagan (CF, LF)
DL- Manny

Pitchers

Scott Baker
Hiroko Kuroda
Bronson Arroyo
Dan Haren
Jon Garland
Stephen Stasburg
AJ Burnett
Phil Hughes
Joba Chamberlain
Francisco Cordero
Cole Hamels
Carlos Silva
Tommy Hunter
Andy Pettitte

MINOR LEAGUERS:

Madison Baumgardner, Brett Wallace, Desmond Jennings, Carlos Carrasco

(These players stay in the FA pool and on their respective team until they lose rookie eligibility or you call them up. I'll be calling Madison up next week.)

------------

OK there's my team.

Now for the trades:

Trade #1: Ben Zobrist for Chris Carpenter
The other guy needs a stealing threat and I really need another big pitcher on my team. I'm thinking of doing this one.

Trade #2: Miguel Cabrera for Tim Lincecum and Carlos Pena
Not a fan of this trade. Pena is hitting .203 or something. Although having Lincecum would be nice for the future

Trade #3: Miggy, Delmon, Haren FOR Adrian Gonzales, Bobby Abreu, Roy Halladay
LOVE the idea of getting Doc but trading both of my big bats (Miggy/Delmon) doesn't sound too good

Those are the trade offers. What do you think? Should I even be looking to trade Miggy to a contender if he can fill a couple weaknesses if it includes a top flight pitcher like Doc and Tim?

I'm definitely out to build for the future as I'm in 7th place now.

What should I be looking for in a trade for Miggy? Who are some other players I should look to trade?

Thanks for all help!

I would definitely do trade 1. Carpenter would add a big, solid, and consistent arm to your rotation. And you can absolutely afford to lose a 2B with the talent you have to back him up with Prado, Hudson, and Uribe.

I definitely would not do trade #2. I'm not a fan of Pena at all. His average will drain your team and his only upside, power, seems to be streaky. Miggy will be a top 5 draft pick next year whereas Lincecum (top pitcher drafted this year) will fall to around 3-5. Plus you have some good young arms like Strasburg, Hughes, Bumgarner and Hunter going forward.

Trade 3 I wouldn't do either. Breaking it down, I would MUCH rather have Miggy than Halladay. I will always take one of the best bats over one of the best arms. So comparing the others, Adrian Gonzalez gets a slight nod over Dan Haren and Delmon Young is better than Bobby Abreu. So if those 4 players balance out (which they roughly do in my opinion), then it comes down to Miggy for Doc, which I already said I'd go with Doc.

Help with mine?

Take trade 1 and run. Stay away from the other offers. You own Miguel Cabrera in a dynasty you don't trade him for anything unless you are absolutely blown away.

So he's a player, along with Strasburg that I should look to build around?

I can dig that.

I agree that Miguel Cabrera is not a guy you trade in a dynasty league, and you do build around him.

I think that Zobrist for Carpenter would be a great trade if you were playing for this year. I'm not convinced he's as great going forward though, given his age and injury history. I'd look to grab a pitcher for Zobrist (who you can afford to move) who's a bit younger but of equal caliber.
