Probable Keepers for 2011

Postby dmendro » Mon Jul 19, 2010 12:53 pm

12 Team, H2H, (R, AVG, HR, RBI, SB, OPS)(W-L,K, IP, SV+HD, ERA, WHIP), $300 Salary Cap, 5 Keepers

So because of some bad cuts and a couple injuries this year (Sizemore and Morales) and just bad luck in matchups (my winning % is like .350, but my breakdown against the whol league is .475), I am out of it already as I am about 40 games behind the last playoff spot (we do category wins rather than weekly wins) so my chances of making the playoffs are astronomically slim.

So with my thoughts looking on to next year here is my current roster breakdown. The question is who do I keep for next year? I have acquired via trades already and extra $47 in salary cap for next year, which puts me at a sizable advantage for next year's draft. 1st year keepers have their salary go up by $5, second year $10 and third year $15. The players cost to keep for next year is in parenthesis. I didn't list the roster fillers I have. I highlighted the guys I am thinking of keeping.

C - Kurt Suzuki ($18)
C - Carlos Santana ($7)
1B - Matt LaPorta ($7)
1B - Ike Davis ($6)
1B - Kendry Morales ($20)
SS - Starlin Castro ($6)
3B - David Wright ($42)
3B - Casey MCGehee ($17)
3B - Ian Stewart ($12)
OF - Adam Lind ($20)
OF - Chris Young ($6)
OF - Brennan Boesch ($8)
OF - Austin Jackson ($6)
OF - Grady Sizemore ($7)
OF - Alex Gordan ($6)

SP - Clay Bucholz ($8)
SP - Rickey Romero ($7)
SP - Edinson Volquez ($6)

If you're going to keep two pitchers, it's gotta be Buchholz and Volquez, not Romero.

Volquez is:

1). Cheaper
2). Has better stuff
3). Has a better lineup supporting him (Votto, Bruce, Phillips, Stubbs).

I'm ok with your hitting keepers. It'd be nice to find room for LaPorta, but it's not necessary.

like laporta, wright at a week position, buckholz, boesch an i guess volquez.I dont like morales just because 1b is deep for a guy who had major injury.wright is expensive but a hr hitting base stealer at a thin position is irreplaceable.dont forget laporta was suppose to be the best prospect in baseball just a couple years ago an now he is playin like it.

I like all the guys you highlighted. I don't know if there is a limit to the number of players you can keep, but if you can keep more, I would add Volquez and Wright. Wright may not be a great value, but you need stars like him in order to win, and you seem to have built up the salary flexibility to keep him around. Laporta is tempting as well... but that decision would be based on how he plays the rest of this year.
