This is not a baseball related question, so if you don't care please don't waste your time.
This is probably not the best forum, but I don't know where to put something that is not baseball related. hammy, please move it if need be. I am not trying to litter. I only ask this, because I honestly trust cafe members more than just putting something up on some random board in the interwebbing.
I just found out that I have been offered a job in my company, which I will most likely accept, In Jacksonville, FL. I currently live in Minnesota and know absolutely nothing about Jacksonville.
I will be moving down there in a little more than a month and I need to get a good Idea of the best areas in Jacksonville to look. I will be moving down there just me and my girlfriend and, for the first year at least, we will be looking to rent a nice apartment. My office will be just south of downtown on the east side of the river.
does anyone have some nice, low crime, areas in jacksonville that a reletively young (upper 20's) couple would enjoy? at least some ideas to begin my search. I am honestly lost because I know nothing about Jacksonville and no one that lives/has lived there..
Never been there but Google is not kind to the city:
The bad news is Jacksonville still had the highest crime rate in the state per 100,000 population and the highest per-capita murder rate of all metropolitan areas in the state. The murder rate has been the highest for 11 years running.
But total crime in Jacksonville dropped 9.7 percent from the previous year with violent crime down 14 percent.

That's also the closest thing to visiting Jacksonville for me, as well.
To be fair, the last time I visited Florida was as a teenager (Disney World/Orlando whereabouts) for about a week (less than 15 years ago). I got the impression that Central Florida is quite a dodgy place, from staying there nearly a week. Not dodgy in the sense that the place was suspiciously crime-ridden, but dodgy in that the place had a suspiciously relaxed vibe about it. For instance, I stayed in a relatively nice Hyatt hotel outside the Disney World premises. There's a bumper boats/miniature golf/go-kart complex, a gas station, and a mini-mall all comprised of restaurants that open at 6pm 'till Midnight... within walking distance of the hotel. During the day, barely a soul walking about and the only noise stirring was from a local business that specializes in helicopter trips of the area. Problem was, there was practically nothing else there besides the highway parallel to the hotel and swamp/marsh land as far as the eye could see. Personally, I thought Disney World was nice, although it's basically a much bigger version of the Disneyland complex I'm used to at home. Orlando was OK and to me, it had the similar vibe to the hotel and surrounding areas I was staying in at the time.
My experience in Florida probably isn't going to be of much help, but hey, better than no opinion, right?
1) Jacksonville isn't in cetral florida.. it's in the NE corner by the ocean.. (no biggie, your input is still relevant) 2) The good news is, instead of Longoria being my favorite player from a far, he now gets to be the hometown hero. YES! (even though Tampa and Atlanta are about equidistant from Jacksonville..)
