Is Shin-Soo Choo worth picking up from waivers?

Postby bobnerns » Mon Jul 12, 2010 3:46 pm

Shin-Soo Choo was dropped in my 10-man H2H league yesterday by my biggest competition. Currently I sit in a comfortable first place. Unfortunately, most people in my league don't pay that much attention. I would like a bit more competition, but it is what it is. Anyways, the person who dropped Choo is more than likely the person I will face in the championship (4 teams make playoffs).

Aside from that information, I am currently 5th in waiver order, but only 1 person ahead of me pays any attention (meaning I'm essentially 2nd). The person who dropped Choo is last and has made several waiver claims recently. Also, I have several players on the DL: Chase Utley, Manny Ramirez, Victor Martinez, Yovani Gallardo, and Josh Beckett.

Right now, I'm not worried at all about my injuries. I am planning for the playoffs since I have nearly guaranteed myself a spot already. So should I use my waiver spot on Shin-Soo Choo? He would be a great addition to my OF if he returns from his thumb injury the same player he was before the DL stint.

My only hesitation is that there have been a few really dumb drops already this season. Very early on, Adam Jones, Brian Roberts, Carlos Lee, and Matt Wieters were all dropped and claimed off waivers. Roberts ended up being a smart drop, but it was before he went on the DL and was still considered a top 5 2B. The most recent and maybe most shocking was Zack Greinke was dropped outright after his 1-8 start (and right before his small winning streak). So my worry about getting Choo is that later on in the season someone much better will be dropped and I will miss out when I could have gotten him.

So any thoughts, ideas, recommendations?

I would claim him...he's recovering nicely and should be back maybe by end of the month. I claimed sizemore (d'oh) the day before he went on DL15, so I feel the pain of bonehead claims. However, Choo should be back and he's a top 5-10 OF when healthy this year.

get Choo, don't worry about dumber drops
find better leagues to play in next year if the guy who dropped Choo is your biggest competition

Grab him now. If it was Rotisserie, I may say no, but HTH in preparation for the playoffs (especially if you have no chance to miss the playoffs).

Help with mine:

I am going to look for a better league next season. The reason Choo was dropped was because his owner thought at the time he would be out 6-8 weeks like initally predicted, instead of potentially coming back by the end of July. And Choo was dropped for a spot starter on the last day of our matchup week so that he could win.
