Big Name Starters...Worth the Gamble? WHIR!!!

Postby pre1322 » Mon Jul 12, 2010 1:28 pm

I'm having issues making a decision on this one...I feel like it's a good gamble but...

Was offered Yovani Gallardo and Jered Weaver for Cliff Lee and Andrew Bailey (or Jonathan Papelbon)

The loss of closers is not an issue...this was a midseason draft and I drafted these two with the intentions of selling them off to sweeten packages for better keepers. My SP is hurting right now, as I have had to resort to streaming 2 spots. IP is a category, so everyone is loaded up on SP, leaving nothing whatsoever on the FA market. My draft day SP gambles just...haven't paid off.

My only issue is with Yovani's oblique injury...its a tough injury for a pitcher to come back from. So the question is...do I gamble and take this package, hoping Weaver and Gallardo can stabilize my staff? Or risk the deal coming off the table and wait for further news on Gallardo?

Here's the roster: 12 team H2H, keep 8, 6x6 w/ OPS and IP added
C Geovany Soto
1B Albert Pujols
2B Brandon Phillips
3B Ryan Zimmerman
SS Jose Reyes
OF Andrew McCutchen
OF Torii Hunter
OF David DeJesus
UTIL Paul Konerko
UTIL Jay Bruce
UTIL Austin Jackson
BN Dexter Fowler
BN Pedro Alvarez
DL Shin Soo Choo

SP Cliff Lee
SP Francisco Liriano
SP Jonathan Sanchez
RP Jonathan Papelbon
RP Andrew Bailey
P Mike Adams
P Daniel Bard
BN James Shields
BN Colby Lewis
BN Gio Gonzalez
BN Derek Lowe (streamed, may keep)
BN Randy Wolf (streamed, will drop)
DL Erik Bedard
DL Jordan Zimmermann

Weaver is a stud. There is no getting around that. He has had some rough outings recently, but he is amazing. Gallardo and Weaver should have a major effect on your team's pitching stats.

^In my blog there I have some stats on Lowe. You should definitely keep him. Randy Wolf, on the other hand, is garbage.

With Bedard coming back sometime between now and the Apocalypse (possibly), you should get some help there. Lewis and Lowe should provide value for you. Stick with your gut on this one.
Check out my blog at http://www.rotoballguru.com/. I do a lot of in-depth statistical analysis and use economics to break down optimal fantasy baseball strategy.
