Sabermetrics beginner

Postby 011472 » Fri Jun 25, 2010 12:26 pm

So I'm a fantasy football guy (don't hate) over here from the other side. Always loved baseball, but haven't played fantasy in a few years. And in the time sabermetrics seems to have taken over. I read the start of the NL Cy Young thread until it was clear that I no longer knew what I was reading about.

BABIP seems pretty clear to me, but FIP? xFIP? WAR? If I'm going to hang out here, I need to catch up quickly! Can anyone recommend a clear resource to understand these new acronyms? Thanks.

You'll find some, if not all, of those terms and what they might mean at Fangraphs.com. Check out this section for some in-depth reading: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.ph ... #winvalues

I'm not exactly a beginner to Sabermetrics and have used a lot of the amazing resources you can find on the web about that topic. But I have never found a really good Sabermetrics 101. What I'm looking for is something that starts at the very beginning but then gradually moves into more complicated topics.

And, dare I show my age, ideally I would love one of those old fashioned things called a book.

Anyone have a good pointer?

It's a bunch of voodoo and bogus most the time. I use bonermetrics, which is far more reliable.

This looks solid. You could also get some stat lingo from the book "Baseball Between the Numbers" by the Baseball Prospectus Team of Experts.
