Greinke was straight dropped in my league about 1.5 weeks ago (right after he pitched two starts ago). He was picked up off waivers and I told the person who picked him up that I was interested in trading for him.
My league is a 10-man H2H 5x5. The first offer was Greinke for Josh Hamilton which I rejected. The new trade is Greinke for Shane Victorino. My initial thought was to decline. Victorino has had a great season so far. He was my top picked OF (got Hamilton in a trade a couple weeks into the season). Already this season Victorino has nearly matched his projected numbers in RBI and HR, and he is on pace to maintain runs and SB.
Greinke on the other hand has had an incredibly disappointing season. He's only had a handful of quality starts though one of his best was his last outing.
So in a straight up deal where I get Greinke, is this trade worth it (not taking into account any need factors)?
Would your answer change if I said I had a decent amount of OF and needed a starting pitcher?
I think it is a good, fair trade. It could very well end up in your favor, because as Victorino has had a nice year he isn't likely to sustain these power numbers if you look at his career averages. Grienke, on the other hand, has had a couple hiccups but still projects as an elite fantasy pitcher.
On a related topic, if you are playing with someone who would drop Zach Grienke to waivers, you and your league mates should seriously discuss tossing that guy.

There's two guys in my league that have made questionable drops this year. Early on, Adam Jones, Brian Roberts (before he went on the DL), Carlos Lee and Matt Wieters were dropped (Lee and Wieters by the guy who dropped Greinke). At the time of the drops, I thought they were crazy. All 4 players were picked up off waivers, and until Greinke those have been the only waiver claims so far. But as it turns out, those drops haven't been that bad. I picked up Jones, but he's been pretty bad since I got him. Obviously Roberts has been on the DL60. Wieters was the 4th drafted catcher in our league and he's been awful. And Carlos Lee has been terrible too.
So while I think dropping Greinke was really stupid, I thought the same at the time of those other drops and they have turned out to not be that bad of decisions.

As for your trade, yes, I'd take Greinke for Victorino in a heartbeat. And you're right. I dumped Roberts and Lee, and could definitely see why people would drop Wieters or Jones to help their teams in a weak area. I think it's strange that the Greinke owner didn't try to shop him around. Weird. Anyways, good luck!
