World Cup of Beers

Postby Mookie4ever » Fri Jun 11, 2010 10:31 am

After a weekend of drinking world beers my friend and I have decided to do a world cup of beers. We don't really have a rooting interest in this (I'm rooting for South Korea, The Dutch, USA and Camaroon in that order but I don't really care that much) so we're going to let the beers decide who we root for.

As much as possible I'm going to try to drink a beer from each country before each match and let the taste decide who I will root for (and who I will bet on b/c I'll bet on each game). Help me fill out my brackets and pick winners b/c I'm having a hard time with this.

Group A

France - Kronenbourg
Mexico - Dos Equis - Cerveza Cucapa (acs) - Pacifico (Red)
South Africa
Uruguay

Group B

Argentina
Greece - Mythos
South Korea - Hite
Nigeria

Group C

Algeria
England - Newcastle - Hobgoblin - Fullers Porter (acs)
Slovenia - Pilsner Urquell (Dan)
USA - Sam Adams - Fat Tire, East Street Wheat, Mama's Little Yella Pills, yeti (from acs although not sure this is fair since I can't get micros from the other countries - I think that I should stick with the big breweries in the interests of fairness)

Group D

Australia - XXXX - Coopers (acs) - Tooheys (Red)
Germany - Paulaner Hefewesien or Oktoberfest (acs)
Ghana
Serbia

Group E

Camaroon
Denmark - Carlsberg (Dan)
Japan - Saporo - Hitochino Nest Beer (acs)
Nederlands - Heineken or Grolsch - Brouwerij de Molen (acs)

Group F

Italy - Moretti :-P - Italy already loses - Peronis (acs)
NZ - Steinlager, Tui, Export Gold (aussie)
Paraguay
Slovenia

Group G

Brazil - Bohemia
Ivory Coast
North Korea
Portugal

Group H

Chile
Honduras - Imperial (acs)
Spain - EStrella Damm

New Zealand: Steinlager, Tui, Export Gold.

If you can find an Export Gold, that is the tastiest of the 3, I can't really tell you more then that because I haven't had one for 10 years. :-S

Got quite a bit of choices for Germany but I'm leaning towards Weihenstephan since it's the world's oldest brewery.

For Denmark, go with Carlsberg.

For New Zealand, go with Steinlager - haven't seen in US though...

Some preferences over your selections: Italy - Peroni, Australia - Tooheys and Mexico - Pacifico. ;-D

Good luck with filling up the African selections. :-o

Some good selections although I think that I have to go with the big breweries over the micros just for the fact that I won't be able to get them over here.

I'm limited to what can be found HERE

The only African beer that is carried are Tusker Lager from Kenya, everything else has to be specially ordered

If you could actually get good US micros up in your neck of the woods, the States would dominate no doubt.

Rogue is getting pretty well known, can you get that in Canada? :-?

Nice to see Estrella Damm representing Spain; that's a Catalan beer, but the most widely distributed in the country (I prefer the stronger Voll Damm). Personally, my favorite Spanish beer is Alhambra Reserva.

I tend to associate Argentina with Quilmes. Super Bock and Sagres for Portugal (I'd go with Super Bock).
