Good offers, bad offers, lateral moves? WHIR ALWAYS

Postby Guzman24 » Mon Jun 07, 2010 5:29 pm

Few deals I'm considering offering to other managers in my keeper league and I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts. Im basically trying to win it all this year. 1st place right now, 2 games up. I really like my balance right now but I'm trying to deal from where I'm deep (SP) and trying to improve.

Trade #1

I send: Howard, Kemp and a pitcher ???
I get: MCab, Ubaldo, C. Gonzalez

Trade #2

I send: Reyes, Arod, Liriano, Garcia, 1st round pick (equates to player ranked around 100)
I get: Longoria, Hanley, Wainwright

What do you think of these deals for this year and moving forward?? Good for me??

12 teams H2H 5x5 (OBP league not AVG) We keep 8

C Suzuki
1B Howard
2B Utley
3B Arod
SS Reyes
OF Kemp,Magglio,Gardner
UT Reynolds

SP JJohnson, Verlander, Price
RP Valverde, Capps
P Liriano, JGarcia

BN Hart, Span, Clippard, JSanchez, Zito, Street
DL Montero

I don't like the first one. You would be acquiring two players who are bound for regression. Ubaldo has a -2.58 ERA-xFIP split, and Cabrera has a HR%/FB% that is a full 5% higher than his career mark. Both are studs, but may be overvalued at this point.
Kemp and Howard still have the chance to bring 1st round talent this year.

Deal 2 is alright for you, but I don't really see the purpose of acquiring Wainwright. I wholeheartedly would support acquiring Longoria and Hanley at the expense of Reyes/ARod and company. Regardless, If you are trying to win this year I'd do it, and I think I'd prefer this side longterm as well.

Thanks for the in depth input. I'm happy with my team as it stands but always looking at ways to improve.

If you were to pick one area where I should look at making a move where do you think it should be? in my eyes my OBP is a bit lacking and I wouldn't mind dealing off Reynolds to improve in that area. I also wouldn't mind getting a top tier SP, maybe packaging up a Liriano and my 1st round pick to get a Halladay type arm.

This might be entirely applicable to this year, but it's the only thing I can see.
Depending on the nature of the keeper league, I would consider getting a little younger. ARod, Howard, and Utley are the cornerstones of your offense, and as the years turn some drop off could eventually be expected. This is not an issue this year, and might not even be next year, but seems to be the only flaw with this team.

As a previous poster said, the only "flaw" i can see with your team is that you may experience some age related regression in the next 2 or 3 years, so getting younger while keeping the talent level of your team high isn't a bad idea. You can make a case for both trades to positively impact your team in all honesty. MCab > Howard in a keeper. CarGon could turn into Kemp, if not better and Ubaldo will be better than any pitcher you add in.

As for trade two, Reyes is a question mark in my mind going forward. Arod is starting to get older so you cannot expect MVP numbers year in and year out from him anymore. Wainwright is >>>> Liriano and Garcia.

In summary, I could see you pulling the trigger on both these deals and enjoying years and years and years of championships.

Deal 2 is better ... I do like the idea of Hanley at SS and I think Wainwright is a nice addition. Reyes is tough to trust right now. Great team you have though.

I'd do both of those deals, although I would be surprised if the first one was accepted. I think you would come out a good deal ahead on that one. On deal #2, it's a closer race, but I would rather have the Longoria side of it.
