Agreed. Then "that guy" gets his 15 minutes of fame, writes an article about it, everyone gets in an uproar, then we realize that "that guy" is an insignificant nobody, and we get to celebrate a great career by an excellent ballplayer.
this is shameless advertising, but I'm a writer for an up-and-coming sports website covering the M's, so I wrote an article on Griffey. http://isportsweb.com/2010/06/03/say-go ... 2-seasons/ take a look if you like, I'd like to say it's pretty decent! As a current 16 year old, I missed the 90's when Griffey was the best player in baseball. Thankfully I got to see the last 1 1/3 years.

Griffey is THE reason I am a baseball fan today. His once in a generation talent level will surely be missed. But what will be missed most of all is his genuine persona which enabled him to be a positive role model in an era which desperately needed them. There was a point where the entire game a baseball was in Griffey's shadow, which is something that cannot be claimed by many men.
I fear he will take this opportunity to hide from the spotlight for a long time after spending basically his whole life under a microscope. Baseball is a better sport with Griffey involved in it, and I hope he takes this opportunity to continue being an ambassador of the game throughout the rest of his life, but I can certainly understand if he feels he has done enough for the sport and decides to take a different approach.
Whatever you decide Griffey, you will always have a soft spot in the heart of millions of fans just like me who grew up idolizing you. Good luck in the future.
