Which (if any) of these FA pitchers should I pick up? WHIR!

Postby krunchyfrogg » Tue Jun 01, 2010 11:58 am

FYI: I'm a little over (something like 15-20 IP) my maximum IP, so if I'm going to pick up a SP, I'm going to have to drop a SP. I could use help in W's and K's.

Here's a list of the top SP's that are on my WW. Which, if any, should I be adding to my team?

Ricky Nolasco
Anibal Sanchez
Wandy Rodriguez
John Ely
Jon Garland
Trevor Cahill
Matt Belisle
Mike Leake
Brett Cecil
Carlos Silva
Jeremy Bonderman

Also, Trevor Hoffman was dropped after he lost his closer's job. Should I pick him up?
I'm middle-of-the-road in Saves, but I'm leading in Holds. Now that Lidge is back, it won't be long until I'm losing Saves with Contreras going back to being a set-up man.

EDIT: My team is the team listed in my signature. For simplicities sake, the SP's I currently own are:

Johan Santana
Johnny Cueto
Matt Garza
Matt Cain
Looking forward to back to back championships in 2011!

Ricky Nolasco if you are a believer. If you want to ride a hot streak, try to catch lightening in a bottle then I would go with Sanchez. Leake has pitched very well too. Thanks for the help on mine.

I would sit tight or maybe at most conider dropping Cueto for Nolasco, as I like Nolasco to turn it around again. If you don't need the holds, you could dump Adams for Hoffman but will Hoffman be a factor after he records his 600th save?

Can't really recommend any of those guys over your current staff. I just don't know what to make of Nolasco and Sanchez has no consistent track record. I love Leake right now but we are all wondering when the wheels start to come off there. The only person I may actually consider is Carlos Silva. I know it sounds crazy but this guy was once a prospect with elite stuff and he was signed by Seattle under the assumption that he would one day be their ace. He has now moved to the NL and seemingly rediscovered his stuff, making him a legitimate option down the stretch. Unlike the Florida, you know the Cubs will never 'give up' so there isn't much risk that the lineup behind him gets traded away (which may help keep the Ws consistent). If you are feeling brave, I'd consider dumping Cueto for him.

As for Hoffman, I'd stay away. Even if you lose Contreras for now, there is always the possibility (or probability?) that Lidge falters or re-injures himself. Considering Philadelphia really trusts Contreras, I'd hold tight with him for as long as you can and hope that an injury somewhere opens the door to some saves. Worst case scenario, he continues to pick up Ks and secures some HDs and Ws for you in late relief.

I don't think any of those guys are a sure thing over guys you already have at the SP spots. I like a lot of the guys you listed though. Now, I'm not following the Philly situation too closely but I think Lidge is the closer before too long and I don't necessarily see Contrares getting a huge number of holds. You could maybe drop him for any guy on that list.

I think you've got a bunch of good pitchers, but I would look at upcoming opponents if guys are relatively equal. I just grabbed Bonderman because he has a few nice starts (incl. tonight) upcoming.
