Ortiz for Aramis? WHIR

Postby Frappy » Mon May 24, 2010 2:50 pm

Hey cafe,

Simple heads-up trade today. I'm in a H2H Weekly points league, 12 team, with no keepers. I picked David Ortiz from the scrap heap a while back, long before he had his huge May. Well, now he has and I was looking to get some value out of him in a deal. I shopped around, and this is the one that interests me the most.

David Ortiz (BOS - DH) for Aramis Ramirez (CHC - 3B)

Pre-draft value definitely swings my way, but both players had terrible starts. The only difference? Ramirez's is continuing while Ortiz is putting on a show this month.
Team-wise, my Util is already firmly occupied by Billy Butler (Who has produced more than Ortiz in his run). And at 1B, of course, is Prince Fielder. It seems as if the only use Ortiz has is to be trade bait. And I don't think he'll retain any of the value that he's gaining with this amazing May.
Meanwhile, Aramis Ramirez will offer another good "Wait and see" project - just like Ortiz was. If Ramirez recovers and produces at good clip, then he would be much more valuable than Ortiz is now. Then again, Ramirez is a 3B, and I currently have Mark Reynolds there. Strikeouts matter in this league, which makes Reynolds an average 3B. All projections would point towards Ramirez having a significantly more productive season.

Anyway, those were the points I was considering. It's probably easier than I think it is. Thanks!

with butler taking up your UTIL, there isn't really a point to holding onto ortiz. his value right now is as high as it'll ever be - get the most you can for him and just take the deal. if aram is the best you can do for ortiz, i would do it

Definitely trade for Aramis. I can't see him not turning it around to some degree plus his having to be plugged into a Util spot kind of sucks.

help?

You could sell higher with Ortiz imo. but I think this trade could work out.

I think this is a good deal for you. ARam should turn things around and I like his upside over Ortiz. Not to mention, ARam once he gets going will play everday, whereas Ortiz is not as reliable.

Well I suppose the one poster brought up something I was considering. Could I do better? This is something that I naturally think before completing any deal. Trading Ortiz is somewhat difficult based on his DH eligibility and questionable value. I see a possibility or two, but they are deals that I'd probably have to expand upon with additional players. I think indirectly getting Aramis from what was essentially the junk yard is not a bad deal. If he turns it around, and I feel that he will (To some extent), then his value really manifests in the sense that I'd have two good 3B (Reynolds and Aramis) to fill my own deficiencies while also having a nice trading chip for the future.

I think it's a solid deal -- BUT to your point about doing better, what I would suggest -- because Aramis is banged up -- is to insert another player into the deal and ask for a similar but better play back ... so maybe, say, upgrade a closer or back end of your rotation this way. Again, use the argument that Aramis is banged up and the thumb is iffy... might be a good by low and kill two birds with one papi and a scrub sort of thing.
