Big Z

So Carlos Zambrano is heading back to the starting rotation for the Cubs. I need pitching bad and Big Z is free. I think I'm going to grab him. Am I crazy? Is my blind and undying sense of optimism as a Cubs fan leading me astray? Is there any redeeming value in Big Z as a starter from here on out? Thanks for thoughts.

I was considering picking up Zambrano myself. I just can't figure the guy out. Anyone have any thoughts?

I am a Cubs fan, so I am quite familiar with him. But that's the problem. Increasingly over the years he's gone from mostly dominant to essentially this season, in which he's been either great or absolutely horrible (and probably more on the horrible side). They tried moving him to the bullpen and it was an enormous failure, so back to the rotation he goes. He's always kept an ERA under 4 and until last year always had 12-15 wins or so (I think he had 9 last year, but this was partly due to how horrible the Cubs were. Part of what swayed me his way this go around is that I think the Cubs may be picking things up. If they do, and he gets the runs their lineup should afford him, then I think he'll do alright by the end of the season. If the Cubs continue to suck like they have, it could be an equally rough year for Zambrano or worse from last year. Good luck if you move on him, too.

More thoughts still very much appreciated. Thanks.

Seeing your team and knowing who you have to drop would help.

But if its not anyone too major yeah I'd add Zambrano. He has the potential to be a great pitcher obviously.

Well this decision just got a little easier thanks in part to Brad Penny's inneffectiveness the past few starts and his injury tonight. He is my drop guy and hopefully zambrano proves he is a winner. Wish me luck.

So there is this pitcher in baseball who has pitched in the ML for 8 seasons, and has never had an ERA over 3.95.
7 of 8 years he's had more than 150 Ks in the season.

I think this is a valuable pitcher. Read: Zambrano.
