Alexi Ramirez: Whose worried?

Postby A Fleshner Fantasy » Wed May 19, 2010 9:31 pm

As I'm sure all of my fellow Alexi Ramirez owners know (as well as a lot of others) his start has been brutal. I know he's not typically a quick starter, but I'm getting a bit concerned. While I know that SS is not a particularly strong position (making it more logical to wait it out and hope he improves), there are a few players who it's tempting to take a flyer on. Whose worried about Ramirez and who thinks that it's worth it to just be patient and give him time to turn it around?

It is time to write him off. Take it from an owner who owned him last year and missed out on guys like Zobrist because I thought he would turn it around. It was a mistake and I recommend you don't make the same mistake. Dump him for the next hot item.

I got sick of waiting for him to "show his potential". I dumped him when Castro got called up. And he is still sitting on the WW.

Konerko and Rios must be drinking the right water because everybody else is struggling in Chicago.

He's a free agent in both my 12-team leagues... I he's a fringe-worthy starter in mixed leagues.

I actually just added him off the FA in a deep bench 10 team league (Drew is my everyday SS). I am not buying into a huge ressurgence but the following stats are worth noting:

2009:
April/March: .214 BA, .273 OBP, .558 OBS (1 HR, 9 RBI, 6 R, 5 SB) :-P
May: .281, .320, .695 (2 - 14 -10 -4)
June: .283, .347, .833 (7 - 15 - 19 - 2)
July: .298, .354, .759 (1 - 9 - 14 - 1)

2010:
April/March: .221, .231, .542 (1 - 8 - 5 - 1)
May: .236, .276, .603 (1 - 6 - 4 - 1)
It's also worth noting that his K/BB in April/March was atrocious (13/1) and has improved thus far through May (8/3).

So I took a flier and am thinking he's having a prolongued early-season slump and should pull out of it soon. I'm not expecting the world but if he begins to produce for a month or so I'd look to deal him on the upswing and see what I can get in return from someone hurting at SS.

I really do not think he is ever going to live up to the hype/potential. IMO we're looking at a guy whose CEILING is the season he had in 2008. If you pay for anything more than 15 HRs/20 SBs you will be sorely disappointed. I think that is approximately his ceiling and it is much more realistic to expect 15 SBs. His avg likely won't help you either, around .275-.280.
