Which closers are going to be traded?

Postby Saltydog » Tue May 18, 2010 10:38 am

Who are the players that will reap the benefits?

Opening Day, I would have said absolutely Matt Capps, Heath Bell, and Frank Francisco would be shopped.

Francisco of course blew up in the first week and Feliz won't be going anywhere. :-D

With the Nationals and Padres hanging around, I don't see Capps or Bell getting shopped unless either team starts to free fall.

This puts Gregerson and Storen in a bit of a holding pattern but what about the following:

Jenks - Thornton
Aardsma - League
Valverde - Zumaya (hasn't Zumaya been the closer in waiting for 3 years now?)
Papelbon - Bard
Dotel - Hanrahan

there's still plenty of time for the Nats and Padres to fall out of it

not sure why you have Valverde on that list at all :-? or Pabelbon :-?

the others are certainly possible though
i'm not sure what their contracts are like but you could probably add Lindstrom and Nunez to that list as well

Don't forget about Wood. Starting the season on the DL may have lowered his value, but the Indians would love to move him. On the off chance that Perez was dropped in your league when Wood came off the DL that's a player to grab.

Dotel for sure. Meeks looks great, and they want to see what they have there.

If the Sox continue to free fall they may be forced into moving Papelbon which would make Bard the closer.

Doesn't Papelbon have a huge contract? If so, who would take on a closer making that kind of jack?

Papelbon has a big number on a 1 year deal, approx. $9mm this year, with arb for two more years I believe, although it could be just one....have to check on that

while i know everyone is riding the padres/nats bandwagons due to their hot streaks, i'm simply not buying that they will hang around all season. it is still early in the season and both of those teams simply don't have the hitting and the starting pitching depth to hang around all season despite the impressive bullpen. i fully expect capps to be traded despite his hot start. that just means the nats will get a lot more than they were hoping for if he continues to have success. i think any of these names have a good chance at being traded at the deadline:

Matt Capps
Octavio Dotel
Kerry Wood
Heath Bell
Jason Frasor or Scott Downs or KevinGregg
Billy Wagner or Takaski Saito (if the braves are far out of it)

I probably could have included "demoted" in the title especially after seeing Hoffman tonight.
