Apparently Carlos "the Eternal Prospect" Pena has fallen under the tutleage of Ivan Rodriquez in Detroit. I have not seen his Spring stats, but some of the Tiger beat writers and columnists (a jaded bunch, as you can imagine, not given to hyperbole) have seen a tremendous improvement in his approach and game.

Lynn Henning from the Detroit News: He <i>really</i> looks good. Pena won’t put up All-Star numbers this season, but he will push 30 home runs and begin to look like the first baseman the Tigers thought they were getting in the Jeff Weaver trade.

We'll see.

He's on the wire in my League. I won't touch him yet, but he's worth keeping an eye on.

Remember 2-3 years ago he was rated as the #1 prospect.

I'll wager that Pena puts up better numbers than David Ortiz this year - just a hunch.

I would be very pleased if you were right, being a big Tigers' fan, but somehow I don't see him as being that good right now (this is assuming Ortiz stays healthy, something he's had trouble with in the past). I know for a fact Pena'll be better than last season, but that really isn't saying too much.
I would probably project Pena at around 25-30 HR 75 RBI (he'll have pretty decent hitters in front of him), but not scoring a ton of runs or hitting for a high average.
