Phillies placed RHP Brad Lidge on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 10, with right elbow inflammation.

The saga continues. Lidge opened the season on the DL and has made only four appearances since being activated in late April. Now it's back to rehabbing for the right-hander, who has been neither healthy nor effective for over a year. Jose Contreras earned his first save of the season (and first of his career) Saturday. He should continue to get chances.

With both Lidge and Madson on the DL this has closer by committee written all over it. Despite Contreras' awesome stats, I don't know that he can be expected to last long as the primary closer at age 38 (especially since this is the first season of his career in the bullpen).

Maybe grab Contreras as a short term option in deeper leagues if you're fighting for saves.

The Closer situation has been frustrating for all of 2009 and now 2010. Madsen can't do it. Lidge, when healthy, needs to prove he can be at least 75% of the closer he was in '08. Contreras got off to a good start last night (fingers crossed).
