Prospect trade (Stanton or Santana)

Postby JonSamuelson » Sat May 15, 2010 9:51 am

Hi guys, I'm brand new to the forums, so I figured I'd introduce myself with a question of prospects...

I'm in a 12 team, AL/NL, dynasty league. 25 man rosters, head-to-head, points style scoring. All in all my team is pretty darn good, but my outfield could be better, and I've been trying (and failing) to rebuild it for years. Here's my lineup...

C: Victor Martinez
1B: Albert Pujols
2B: Asdrubal Cabrera
3B: Evan Longoria
SS: Hanley Ramirez
OF: Manny Ramirez
OF: Josh Hamilton
OF: Shin-Soo Choo
DH/Util: Justin Morneau

SP: CC Sabathia
SP: Johan Santana
SP: Matt Garza
SP: Cole Hamels
CL: Jose Valverde

BN: Jason Kubel
BN: Andruw Jones
BN: Carlos Santana
BN: Brett Wallace
BN: Michael Taylor

BN: Hiroki Kuroda
BN: Joe Blanton
BN: Carl Pavano
BN: Chris Tillman
BN: Kyle Drabek
BN: Michael Montgomery

Our league values prospects pretty highly, in large part because it became very stratified for several years (a few really good teams and a few really bad teams), and the weaker teams started to horde prospects in an effort to try to get better. The strategy is working for nearly all of them, but it's also made the good teams start to need to pick up prospects earlier than we'd perhaps like to, in order to have any prospects at all. Realistically it's gone a bit overboard, as evidenced by the fact that my team is good, and I'm carrying 6 minor league prospects. Anyway, that's neither here nor there.

As I mentioned, I've been frustratedly trying to rebuild my OF for a long time. It's in pretty good shape right now, but who doesn't want to get better, y'know? I would REALLY like to get Mike Stanton off of one of the other teams in my league, and I offered a trade of Brett Wallace and Kyle Drabek to get him. Wallace doesn't have the ceiling of Stanton, but his floor is A LOT higher, and I think the addition of Drabek more than makes up for the difference. Plus, I don't have an opening for Wallace in the foreseeable future, with Pujols/Morneau/Longoria sort of entrenched at the 1B/3B/DH area where he'll be playing once he makes it to the Majors. Anyway, the other owner didn't have a great deal of interest in that deal, and countered with the same thing, but with Carlos Santana in place of Brett Wallace, so the offer right now is...

I give: Carlos Santana & Kyle Drabek
I get: Mike Stanton

I'd just love to have a little discussion about what you guys think of the trade? Stanton's ceiling is incredible, but his low contact rate make it difficult to think of him as a sure thing. Santana's ceiling is also great, particularly for a catcher, and I think he's much closer to a sure thing than Stanton. I'm not too worried about giving up Drabek, but I do think his addition means I'd be overpaying to get Stanton by a significant amount. Like I said, I'd love to hear what you guys think.

Yeah, that's a toughie. I agree that Drabek's not really a factor too much -- I don't think he's ever been as good as the hype. The question is who's better among the prospects. I certainly think Stanton is the better hitter and I think he'll be as good as the hype he's currently getting. He might have a Heyward like impact. That said, Santana's at the much more difficult-to-acquire C position.

In my mind, I do this deal and then look for a way to also acquire a C prospect. I imagine Posey's owner isn't interested in trading him. What are your chances of nabbing Harper once's he selected? A little early, but he might progress quickly.

Help me?
