Hoffman and Dotel; more harmful than helpful

Postby fmluder » Thu May 13, 2010 3:18 pm

I am in a 14-team mixed 5x5 roto league (non-keeper). I followed the expert's advice (don't pay for saves) and wound up with Hoffman and Dotel as two primary closers. Apart from blowing 6 saves between them already, their ratios are killing my team. Just when it looked like they were settling down in May, Hoffman goes out and gives up 3 more runs in a non-save situation yesterday. Help - my team can't take this anymore!

At the moment I'm in the middle of the pack for Wins, K's, and Saves (I got a few extra from Madsen in April), and near the bottom in ERA and WHIP. Thanks to my hitting I'm in 5th place overall. At this point I'm seriously considering punting saves. I have much more to gain in the other pitching categories than I do to lose in the save category. There is no innings pitched cap. Any advice one way or the other would be appreciated.

Trading for a closer is unlikely because in a 14 team league almost everyone has 2 closers and parting with 1 of them puts them at a serious disadvantage with the rest of the league. Here's my roster anyway;

C V-Mart
1B LaRoche
2B Pedroia
3B Cantu
SS Hanley
OF Span
OF Rasmus
OF Rios
UT Ortiz
1B Smoak
OF Granderson (DL)
OF Cruz (DL)
OF Hawpe

P Hamels
P Wa-Rod
P Weaver
P Hoffman
P Dotel
P Pettitte
P Garland
P Cueto
P Sheets
P LeBlanc
P De La Rosa (DL)
