Trade pitching for batting upgrade? - WHIR

Postby oxhammer » Thu May 13, 2010 11:45 am

An owner wants pitching and has some hitters that he's willing to part with. What offers should I make, if any? Berkman, Figgins, and Reyes have underperformed, but the season is still young. What if I offered Berkman/Figgins/Reyes/Peavy for Sandoval/Wright/Vázquez? I could pick up Aviles as a FA.

To me, this would not be enough...

Here's the breakdown (in the way that I see it):

Jake Peavy > Javier Vasquez: Sure Peavy has only had two great starts in a row, but I really think he's gonna really be their ACE, like he was in SD.

Then we have this:

David Wright + Kung Fu Panda for Chone Figgins + Jose Reyes + Lance Berkman.

If this was like 5 years ago, I would say, sure, it would be a fair deal, but if you were on the receiving end and needed pitching help (had the other guys' team) would you consider doing this offer? :-/

To me, Figgins has reached the end of the road, I don't see any late surge coming from him... Berkman is like 34 years old, and has REALLY underperformed... especially since he's on a struggling Astros team, that doesn't know the definition of a winning franchise (see Figgins, Chone - in terms of talent, or lack of in this case)

Jose Reyes? It's a nice start but I would start with Jose Reyes + Jake Peavy + maybe someone like Carlos Gonzalez and Maybe Andruw Jones, and maybe throw in Josh Hamilton from his side. (remember, to get talent back, you have to give talent).

So then it would be:

Peavy + Reyes + CarGo + Jones for Wright + KungFu + Hamilton + Vasquez.

I'd start negotiations with that 4 for 4 and and see where things go from there... Good Luck!
