so in 5/6 leagues this season i figured i'd be awfully clever and target gordon beckham as a potential cheap ~.280/20/80 type guy at 2B, what with 2B having utley (who is the reason i don't have beckham in that 6th league) then kinsler (who i'm oddly not quite as high on as most, despite production over the last few years) and cano (who actually i should've targeted pretty high, i slept on his production for years) then uggla... then it falls to crap, unless you love zobrist or aaron hill or something.
i'm in chicago and i've seen gordon do his thing, which stinks, as he's suffering the first "uh oh" of his professional career right now, mired around ~.220/1/4/2 or something and whilst it hasn't killed me (over the last few seasons, my strategy of using the draft to invest in pitching to ensure i've got a top-3 ERA/WHIP/Ks and having 4+ closers to make the focus being on projecting up and coming 30/100 type talent, along wiht SBs) i've got 5 teams (the 6th was a crapshoot, it was an autopick roto team that didnt draft til 2 weeks into the season and managed to lose my autodraft tankings) that in a standard yahoo 5x5 12 team roto go from 79.5 points (winner's league) to about 95, so i'm either in first or second ranging from 15 points down to 11 points up (in 2 leagues)... in all of them, basically, i'm strapped for average/HR/RBIs, with runs falling in the middle of the pack cuz i tend to lead the league in steals (rajai davis, brett gardner, with a dash of juan pierre... outside from having one of the "big" steals guys somewhere)
so basically i need some standard fare production, and the question is would you try to go waiver wire to get someone to plug in whilst sitting beckham, or make a big trade for one of the "names' at 2nd, or even an aaron hill buy-low type scenario?
here are some of the names available at 2nd base in these lseagues:
juan uribe (~.280/3/18), also with SS/3B eligibility
ian desmond (~.250ish/3/11/3) -- he was a sexy late round el-cheapo draft pick then started slow and got dumped
then it falls off a cliff...
reid brignac? only 50ab
aki iwamura??
or well, anyone you can think of?!
i had aaron hill from day one last season and his .280/36/108 was like, yeah vindication.. hell someone on here pointed him out as the uber-sleeper to me and i looked him up researched and said "hey this guy could be a not-so-dark horse for .280/20/80" and then much like this pujols kid in 01, he just started hitting... and short of one doggy stretch, he never really stopped.
so what can one do when they've committed to beckham and believe that one he figures it out he'll play at a .280/20/80 type clip, tho with the aggregate numbers not being that, and now it's like UH OH CRAP cuz i undersold SS all year (leaving me with either stephen drew or theriot thus far) and i've got my steals and i've likely gotta make a few trades (i drafted haren this year fully planning to milk his early season dominance and then trading him before his 2nd half fades... but 3-1 4.50 thus far = ugh, sell kinda low?! effthat!) but in all these leagues i've got hanson, felix hernandez, phil hughes, ricky romero, lincecum in one, haren in 2-3, matt cain in ~3 leagues, and david price in 2-3 leagues... so i'm deep there, but i mean, what would you do?
WHIR-- but i'll take me a few hours, damned dui classes
