Need HOLDS in a deep keeper league

Postby askretzinger » Wed May 05, 2010 11:23 pm

I'm in a deep 6X6 keeper roto league. 15 teams, 23 starters (9 of which are pitchers) and 17 reserve spots. We are only allowed 8 free agent moves and 12 roster moves for the season and every move can include 2 players swapped for 2 players. I had to build my team through the league's expansion rules and this is the first year I've been competitive and am currently sitting in first. My biggest issue is HOLDS! I have Burke Badenhop from Florida and Jason Frasor from Toronto in my starting roster and Carlos Villanueva and Phil Coke in my reserve roster. None of which are consistently being put in holds situations. I'm trying to find at least one steal through free agency but it's such a hard stat to follow. Anybody with any good ideas, I would be grateful for any suggestions.

Here's a list of current F.A. middle relievers with 3 or more current holds that I'm looking at:

Josh Rupe KC currently with 5
Brad Ziegler OAK 4
John Grabow CHC 4
Will Ohman BAL 4
Jesse Crain MIN 3
Chris Ray TEX 3
Chris Sampson HOU 3
Fernando Nieve NYM 4
Blake Hawksworth STL 3

There are more F.A. available, but Rupe is currently the only one with 5 or more.

You're right, holds are hard to chase. That's for sheet sure. However, a few things i look at are:

1. What team are they playing on (are they playing with leads in close games?)
2. How secure is their position in the bullpen (not necessarily 8th inning setup guy, but are they being used enough)
3. Track record

Out of the guys you mentioned i like Nieve. Best team listed (Besides Hawksworth for STL), best grip on 8th inning spot, best track record.

However, if Jose Contreras is still avail in your league, scoop him up now. He'll be a holds master for the Phils and may even get the occasional save. He's throwin darts and hittin the upper 90's. Seems to be a real good fit for him.

Better yet, atleast for me, is that he has SP eligibility, so you can max out on Holds/Saves from the SP slot and fill in yet another RP in the RP slot. It's a beautiful thing.

GOod luck and thanks for the help w/ mine

I ended up making a trade for Tyler Clippard. Didn't cost much at all, so I think that will solve this dilema
