Interesting Mauer-Liriano trade...what do u guys think? WHIR

Postby TheBambino » Wed May 05, 2010 2:58 pm

I get: Mauer, Baker and an open spot for someone + his 5th round pick next year
I give: Bruce, Liriano and Y Molina + my 2nd round pick next year

Heres my thoughts:
- I like having an elite catcher for 2 years who can rake like a stud.
- Bruce is a little too inconsistent for me to put in the lineup every day as I have Sizemore, ludwick and reynolds already!
- It hurts moving Liriano but I get Baker back and have Haren, Carp, Peavy and Danks already.
- For my open spot I can grab a sable or hot hitter...(Tejada, Theriot, Freese, etc)

What do you guys think?... this will probably be the biggest trade I make this year so I want to make sure its a slam dunk!

Thanks

Thanks for the help on my thread!

Hmm... Well, Mauer would undoubtedly provide a boost to your BA and power numbers this season, and is obviously a solid keeper. I'm having a tough time deciding if that is worth the trade off at SP and loss of Bruce, though. Plus next year's draft hit. I was also one of the guys who wouldn't touch Mauer before the mid second round in a draft this year.

I think Bruce is starting at the bottom, and should improve as this season progresses. If Liriano can stay even remotely consistent, he's a lot better than Baker would be at that slot. Finally, while Molina isn't the stud Mauer is, he's still a fairly reliable mid level catcher. My gut reaction is to reject. You do need to think about improving your BA somehow, I'm just not sure that catcher is the spot to do it if you're playing to win now. If anything, I'd try to upgrade OF/Util first, probably by packaging away Sizemore or Pierre with a SP for a more consistent hitter.

Not too big on you giving up the pick and I agree with everything silverlion said. I think I would pass on it.

I think I would pass as well. Does the boost in value from Molina (or the average catcher) to Mauer outweigh the loss of Bruce, your pick and the drop from Liriano to Baker? I don't think it does.

Please help me out:

I don't like that for you. I would pass as well; you are giving up too much.

I think I recall you posting another variation of this trade previously which I liked.

I still think that in your keeper format, you are trading non-keepers for a keeper, which I like. With only being able to keep 6, you would keep 1 maybe 2 at most of Liriano, Carp and Haren. And you would be splitting hairs to argue which 1 or 2 you should take.

I can see losing Brucce hurting, but you aren't going to keep him and you have Magglio just sitting on your bench. Since neither one would be kept, for this year alone I wouldn't have any problem playing Mags over Bruce. There is no way you won't be taking a hit if Liriano is back to form, but you have to give to get in any trade

The things that worry me is first Mauer's health and second that second round draft pick. In a 10 team keeper, with only 6 keepers, that pick is going to yield a pretty good player and you have to factor that in. If you can somehow give him a later pick or something else instead of the pick, I think I would do this trade.
