Buy low on Pence?

Postby mak1277 » Mon May 03, 2010 9:56 pm

10-team NL-only. 5x5 with OBP instead of Avg.

Started off very slowly, especially in the OF. I was offered Pence and M. Olivo for Heath Bell. There's no question this trade is appealing to me from an offensive point of view, so I'm left asking two questions.

1) Is Pence going to bounce back to have a normal year?
2) Am I absolutely shooting myself in the foot getting rid of Bell?

Leave a link and I'll help. Promise :-)

C - Ryan Hanigan
1b - Berkman
2b - Phillips
3b - Andy LaRoche (A. Ramirez currently riding the pine)
ss - Renteria (Rollins on DL)
Of - Soriano, Willingham, G. Jones
Util - Adam LaRoche

SP - Lincecum
SP - Penny
RP - Bell
P - Dotel
P - Arroyo
P - B. Myers

B - C. Gomez, G. Sanchez, E. Jackson, J. Chacin, C. Silva

I don't trust pence. He's stuck in a pretty anemic offense as well. Plus, is he better than soriano, Wilmingham, and Jones. I don't think so.
Without Bell, who will be your RP?
Is there not a C out there on the waiver wire that you can pick up?

I wouldn't do this deal. You give up your RP for a 3rd or 4th OF. Olivo is solid, but I have to imagine another C on the waiver that is similar.

Unfortunately, Pence is more valuable in an AVG league (career AVG .285) tan in an OBP league (career OBP .335). So basically, your trading your 2nd best pitcher for a guy who might not end up being your 2nd best OF. Yes, Olivo is a big upgrade at C, but you can probably trade a lesser pitcher to get him. Bell is the 2nd best closer in the NL and you should get more for him than Pence.

I have to agree with the above. Even tho Bell may well lose his closer job by the trading deadline, when he gets dealt to another team, for right now you have to take what you can get from him, because he is the only reliable closer you have. I don't think Pence and Olivo are enough of an upgrade to your team to do this deal.
