Granderson leaves game with groin injury

Postby CharlatanSin » Sat May 01, 2010 3:54 pm

Rive Ave Blues:
Curtis Granderson left the sixth inning of today’s game with some kind of lower body injury. He pulled up lame going first to third on a single, and may have stepped on the bag awkwardly goings around second. He was replaced by Randy Winn. There’s no word on how serious the injury is, but we’ll be sure to update this post when he know more.

It didn't look good. He was limping really badly...

In the postgame, Girardi said Grandy's "probably" going on the DL with a strained groin. He's heading in for an MRI, which doesn't sound like good news.

Winn and Thames will platoon in his place, so there's no fantasy upside for those of you who are wondering.

of course there is, Thames is the NL version of Gomes. You can get some much needed HRs if plug him in on days against LHP.

It's a grade two strain. The guys on Baseball Tonight are saying it looks like a 4 to 6 week thing. As a Yankee fan and a Granderson owner, FML.

From Rotowire:

"Granderson was placed on the 15-day DL with a grade 2 left groin strain, Newsday reports.

Spin: Brett Gardner will likely shift to center field with Granderson out, with Marcus Thames and Randy Winn getting increased playing time in left."
"This guy leads the league in most offensive categories, including nose hair..."

There was some talk today that they're much more optimistic than they were yesterday. One quote I saw even suggested 3 weeks as a return. I'd bet that he's out till after June 1 though. They'll want to make sure he's completely healthy before throwing him back out there.

I'm betting 4-6 weeks. Here's a link that explains a grade 2 strain.

http://sportsmedicine.about.com/cs/inju ... prains.htm

Grade II Strain: This is a moderate strain with more extensive damage to muscle fibers, but the muscle is not completely ruptured. Healing occurs within three to six weeks.

Even if he's fully healed after 3 weeks, he would still need a rehab assignment. That would take at least 4 days (play 1 day, rest, then play 2 straight days before he is considered ready to go). That would mean 4 weeks before you want him in your lineup.
