I've been trying to figure out what's the most logical setting for custom leagues to keep a fair balance between pitching and batting contribution.
Maybe two settings: weekly minimum PA and weekly maximum starts (pitchers) can do the trick.
Major League batters, on average, goes to the plate about 4 times per game. In a public league setting, we have 10 active batter spots.
Give managers a leeway but still keep them competitive. That translates to 10 x 4 x 6 (days per week) = 240 PA per week.
Something close to this number may be set if the system provides an option of weekly minimum PA.
As for pitchers, managers should recognize the importance of reliefs. Again, give managers a little leeway while keeping them aware of which SP to use for a 25-man roster (for example). I would say a 7 starts-of-weekly maximum is good.
Or 8, or 6, the point is that having these options can provide a different dynamic to the way managers build their fantasy teams.
Maybe all fantasy systems (Yahoo, espn) should incorporate these options: weekly minimum PA and maximum starts.
