Pena/Ian Kennedy for Price/Nick Johnson - OBP league

Postby rich101682 » Fri Apr 30, 2010 2:38 pm

20 team league, 5 keepers, OBP instead of AVG.

I was offered David Price and Nick Johnson for Carlos Pena and Ian Kennedy. Roster Below:

C: Chris Snyder
1B: Carlos Pena
2B: Aki Iwamura
3B: Evan Longoria
SS: Edgar Renteria
OF: Jay Bruce
OF: Justin Upton
OF: BJ Upton
UTIL: Daric Barton
BN: Ryan Raburn
BN: Reid Brignac
DL: Everth Cabrera

SP: Chad Billingsley
SP: Gavin Floyd
SP: Ervin Santana
SP: Ian Kennedy
RP: Billy Wagner
RP: Heath Bell
P: Franklin Morales
BN: Clayton Richard
BN: Dallas Braden
BN: Jhoulys Chacin

I'm torn about if I should accept this trade.

The upside would be that I would have a potential ace for my team in Price. Being in a 20 team league, pitching is extremely hard to come by off the waiver wire (Best available SP right now are Bud Norris and Homer Bailey, most of the top SP prospects are already rostered). And getting Nick Johnson in an OBP league is never a bad thing.

The downside would be losing the power from Pena. I'd have to hope that Bruce, Longo and the Uptons would be able to carry me, because there isn't much else out there. Plus, I'd be relying on Daric Barton and Nick Johnson as my primary 1B, neither of which has a stellar health record.

I guess it comes down to Pena vs. Price. Am I giving up too much for a SP that has been great, but doesn't have much of a track record?

WHIR of course.

I have never been a big fan of CPena, so I would make this deal. Kennedy is a fly ball pitcher in a home park that is homer friendly. Johnson is an on base machine, and Price looks like he might be making good on all that hype he had last season.

In a keeper league, I'd say the Price is right here... take it because Pena to me is less certain going forward.

I would do it. You are going to lose a decent bit of power (obviously) but the hope is that with Longio, Bruce and both Uptons, that you would still be pretty respectable there and the bottom line is that Price is more keeper-worthy than Carlos Pena.
