I know he dealt with an elbow injury early in spring training, but is he going to gain any additional arm strength velocity? Are most guys at their normal velocity entering the season or at least 4 starts in?
He's pitching well right now (as I type this he just gave up a leadoff hit in the 7th inning), but I don't have much confidence in his ability to come near his 2008 stats. His fastball velocity just isn't there.
As shown by fangraphs ( http://www.fangraphs.com/pitchfx.aspx?p ... position=P
), his average fastball is 92 and he has consistently been around 90-91 tonight. Not to even mention his slider averaged 84 mph in his wonder season. I would be fine if he was known for immaculate control, but from what I've seen on mlb.com gameday he doesn't pinpoint his pitches and consistently pitches up in the zone, which would be ok with his old velocity. I don't know how he has managed 8 strikeouts tonight but I'm not a believer and I hope I can deal him to someone quickly.
